1987 album
$8.65 For the follow up to his classic SWEET BABY JAMES, which rivals TAPESTRY's place in the boomer canon, archetypal sensitive singer-songwriter Taylor wisely elected not to stray too far from the approach that had worked so well on his previous album. He covers another Carole King tune ("You've Got A Friend,") perfects the L.A. folk-rock sound he inaugurated on his earlier work, courtesy of studio hotshots ...
| | James Taylor One Man Dog CD (1972)
1987 CD music
$6.85 Mostly recorded at Taylor's home studio, ONE MAN DOG is an atypical release for a man known for putting out straightforward sets of his distinctive brand of folk-rock. This release from 1972 came after Taylor had achieved a good measure of stardom, and was free to explore some untraditional approaches. After this record, he returned to a more straight-forward format, but ONE MAN DOG has a relaxed, pastoral vibe that makes for enjoyable listening.
The record consists of 18 shortish pieces strung together: traditional pop/folk songs, like the graceful single "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight," as well as humorous, off-the-cuff gems like the ode to a favorite food "Chili Dog," a jig, a drug song ("Mescalito"), and several gentle instrumentals. The production is more low-key than usual, and even though the atmosphere is relaxed, the playing is top-notch thanks to Taylor stalwarts Danny Kortchmar, Russ Kunkel and Leland Sklar. ...

| | Jimmy Smith Fourmost CD (1991)
1987 music CDs
$12.49 FOURMOST captures the collaborative efforts of drummer Grady Tate, tenor saxman Stanley Turrentine, long-time Smith guitarist Kenny Burrell and the master organist himself, as they groove through a sizzling live set. Recorded in 1990 at Fat Tuesday's in New York City, the show overflows with the kind of evocative, free-flowing yet tightly disciplined artistry one has come to expect from Smith. The soul that drips off tracks like "Midnight Special" and Burrell's own "Soulful Brothers," as filtered through Smith's mind-bending hand/foot work at the Hammond, Turrentine's pure, personal tone, and Burrell's swinging melodic lines, is enough to make a convert of just about anyone.
Even tired standards such as "Summertime" and "My Funny Valentine," as well as the two Ellington treatments ...

| | Roches CD (1979)
1987 album
$8.39 This is a stunning debut, and the standard by which all of the Roches' subsequent releases have been measured. The three Roche sisters have voices that meld in ways that only those of a family can. THE ROCHES is built upon a frame of sparest accompaniment (usually just an acoustic guitar), and is in ways quite symphonic. Producer Robert Fripp (of King Crimson) wisely chose to render the Roches' sonic world in pristine clarity, keeping the spotlight focused squarely on the singing during the course of this album's 10 songs.

Despite its relative brevity, the collection does manage to fit ...

| | Bright Eyes I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning CD (2005)
1987 album
$10.79 In early 2005, young indie icon Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes) unveiled two full-length albums--I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING and DIGITAL ASH IN A DIGITAL URN. Whereas the latter proved to be a departure into electronic music, the former sticks to Oberst's established sound, which combines the urgency and heart-on-the-sleeve sentiment of emo-rock with twangy, down-home feel of alt-country and folk music.
I'M WIDE AWAKE begins with Oberst telling a story that morphs into "At the Bottom of Everything," a jangly, upbeat tune featuring My Morning Jacket's Jim James on backing vocals. Throughout the record, Oberst reaches nearly hysterical peaks, seemingly overcome with emotion as his wavering voice, which often recalls Violent Femmes' Gordon Gano, veers almost, but not quite, out ...
