| | Rodrigo Y Gabriela 11:11 CDs (2009) Digipak
Art-School 4th CD music
$12.09 The very first moments of Rodrigo y Gabriela's sophomore effort, 11:11, hit the listener cold in the face, and not just because of the amazing guitar playing. Sure, it's there, but it's what anyone who heard the duo's astonishing debut would expect. No, it's the sound of the record: immediate, forceful, crystalline; it's in-your-face compelling and impossible to ignore. 11:11 features 11 new compositions, dedicated to 11 musical artists (not all guitarists, either) who have had an influence on the duo. Recorded in Ixtapa, Mexico, ...

| | Amalia Rodrigues CD (1997)
Art-School 4th album
$10.69 Released by the DRG label in 1997, this compilation presents 20 tracks by the legendary Portuguese singer Amalia Rodrigues. The most revered artist in the melancholy fado style, Rodrigues became an international star in the 1950s and '60s, and that highly successful phase of her career is featured here. "Fado De Saudade" typifies her spare, lilting, and mournful aesthetic, with Rodrigues's voice sounding both powerfully assured and seemingly on the verge of tears at the same time. AMALIA RODRIGUES also includes "Coimbra," a classic Portuguese tune that became a staple in her repertoire, and "Fado ...

Art-School 4th CD music
$18.99 Smithfield Fair is a song-driven musical trio with close warm harmonies, driving rhythms, and a variety of acoustic instruments, including guitar, mandolin, bagpipes, accordion, and bodhran. The music has massive energy and passion and the songwriting is subtle, concise and intriguing. Critics have hailed their original material, and it regularly receives radio airplay worldwide. Singer/guitarists Jan and Dudley-Brian Smith founded the group in 1989 and drummer Frang Bladen was added in 1995. The trio has a long-standing reputation for fiery performances and polished passions. Family and cultural connections merge to create a unique sound and musical experience that has awed and excited audiences all over the world through live performances and radio. Smithfield Fair is joined on this recording by superbly understated acoustic bassist Bob Smith, aggresively innovative guitarist David Praet and fiddler Gina Forsyth of the Malvinas. The ...
| | Doobie Brothers CD (1971) Japan; Mini LP Sleeve
Art-School 4th music CDs
$30.95 The album's sedate, almost folk-music feel (check out the concluding acoustic blues, "Chicago") is also somewhat strange when you consider that the Doobie Brothers had spent the preceding years as the house band for the San Jose chapter of the Hell's Angels. In any case, this is a solid and obviously promising album, with the most rocking cut being a cover of Randy Newman's "The Beehive State." Although the album doesn't near the pop-rock heights the band would refine in later years, it is a solid effort with a dash of country, a dash of boogie, and some fine songwriting.
Japanese pressing packaged in a miniature LP sleeve. Warner. 2006.
The Doobie Brothers' debut album, released to a largely uncaring world in 1971, produced no hit singles. This seems strange in retrospect. Listening to the album today, one can hear that the Doobies' template (albeit sans the ultra-catchy pop hooks) was already ...
