| | Sevendust Alpha CD Sevendust Discography of CDs
While all the alt-metal signifiers are firmly in place on Sevendust's sixth studio album--thrashy drumming, mesmerizing guitar heavyosity courtesy of Sonny Mayo--Sevendust stands apart from their peers in their attention to the rhythm. On songs like "Driven," chunky, riff-heavy verses burst into half-time choruses that ensnare and explode like land mines. Lajon Witherspoon's nuanced vocals also take surprising turns, from yowling to soul-baring crooning to something indefinably celestial. The band is not shy about adding the odd production touch here and there, like the bursts of rhythmic static mid-way through "Suffer," the effectively creepy spoken-word vocal intro to "Confession of Hatred," and hypnotic piano tinklings that precede the machine-gun guitars on "Aggression."
Amp - Amended ProducKerrang (Magazine) (p.49) - "Sevendust's twin guitars are as deeply bellicose as ever, and surprisingly polished in final production." Purchase Alpha CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Megadeth Endgame CD (2009)
Alpha album
$15.65 The release of 2009's ENDGAME brings with it a startling realization: if first-generation thrash metal fans had been polled about which of the genre's "Big Four" -- Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth -- would prove to be the most resilient and consistently prolific over the next quarter century, the only sure-fire consensus would probably have been "well, anyone but Megadeth!" And yet, 12 studio albums and 150-plus songs later -- more than any of the other three have managed -- that's exactly what's come to pass. The group's second release for Roadrunner, whose title apparently refers to "coming full circle" rather than any sort of goodbye, finds the latest iteration of Megadeth-- debuting new guitarist Chris Broderick(ex-Nevermore, Jag Panzer)--working primarily within their technical thrash comfort zone (think PEACE SELLS through RUST IN PEACE), ...

Not only is Judas Priest's 1980 release BRITISH STEEL one of its very best albums, it also proved to be one of heavy metal's all-time classics. After Priest spent the '70s honing its dark, heavy-duty metal to perfection, the band decided ...
| | Astra Weirding CD (2009)
Alpha songs
$10.69 During the late '90s, it seemed like prog rock had finally achieved extinction. But fast forward ten years later and the genre was thriving once more - as evidenced by the arrival of such groups as Astra and their 2009 full-length debut, THE WEIRDING (which includes some very Roger Dean-inspired cover artwork). Hailing from an area not exactly known for ...
| | Megadeth Peace Sells... But Who's Buying CD (1986) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Alpha album
$9.99 Guitarist Dave Mustaine was an original member of thrash-pioneers Metallica. But he was booted from the band during the recording of that band's debut album, KILL 'EM ALL. Instead of moping around, Mustaine returned to California and immediately formed another group--Megadeth. He promised his fans that the new outfit would be faster and more lethal than his former band, and Megadeth's 1985 debut, KILLING IS MY BUSINESS, AND BUSINESS IS GOOD, made good on this threat. Megadeth and Metallica duked it out in the music press, but both acts thrived. In 1986, each released its finest record, Metallica's MASTER OF PUPPETS and Megadeth's PEACE SELLS...BUT WHO'S BUYING?
While Metallica initially shunned MTV, Megadeth used the video format to its advantage--becoming the first thrash band to do so. Both "Wake Up Dead" and the anthemic title track received constant play on MTV's HEAVY METAL HOUR; the latter song's brief bass intro was even used as the theme to MTV news in the early-'90s. Tracks such as "The Conjuring," "Devil's Island," "Good Mourning/Black Friday," and a cover of Jeff Beck's "I Ain't Superstitious" proved to be just as brutal. PEACE SELLS is an influential, all-time heavy metal classic.

| | Exodus Bonded By Blood CD (1985)
Alpha CD music
$7.85 Had it been released immediately after it was recorded in 1984, Exodus' Bonded by Blood might be regarded today alongside Metallica's Kill 'em All as one of the landmark albums responsible for launching the thrash metal wave. But by the time it finally hit the streets more than a year later due to numerous record company-related difficulties, the genre the band helped spawn had evolved at an alarming rate (again, largely thanks to the unstoppable Metallica) and Exodus were left to wonder what kind of impact they may have had without these setbacks. Opening with the mind-blowing power of title track, the band immediately pummels through a number of astounding thrashers, including "And Then There Were None" and, perhaps their best well-known track, "A Lesson in Violence" -- a veritable handbook for thrash etiquette. Though less enduring, "Metal Command" is one of the band's most fully realized compositions and leads the way into concert the fave "Piranha," which may sound a tad dated, or charmingly naïve depending on the listener. The same can be said for the remaining material, and while "No Love" could have done without its acoustic intro, the band closes strong with "Deliver Us to Evil" and the crushing intensity of "Strike of the Beast." The 1989 reissue on Combat Records adds a couple of live ...
| | Yngwie Malmsteen War To End All Wars CD (2000) (Import) Bonus Tracks
Alpha music CDs
$33.59 No, War to End All Wars isn't a Molly Hatchet album, the Frank Frazetta cover painting notwithstanding. It's Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force's 2000 album on Spitfire, which also finally gave Malmsteen's '90s output a proper U.S. reissue release at about the same time. The fleet-fingered Swedish guitar god plays all the electric and acoustic guitar parts on War to End All Wars, of course, and he also plays bass and sitar. And, for better or worse, he writes all the lyrics. His supporting players include vocalist Mark Boals, keyboardist Mats Olausson, and drummer John Macaluso. War to End All Wars is packed with Malmsteen's jaw-dropping, neo-classical, light-speed guitar shredding, and the three instrumentals are arguably the best tracks. (Face it, nobody listens to a Malmsteen album for the vocals, and Boals' operatic wailing wears thin after awhile.) "Molto Arpeggiosa" is the highlight and the track's foundation, oddly enough, is the rigidly spry bass riff; never fear, for Malmsteen quickly unleashes the rockets in his fingertips. His impossibly fast soloing on "Preludium" and "Instrumental Institution" ...
