The carefully named Original Artists Hits of the 50's delivers what it promises, offering three discs of '50s hits by the artists who made them famous. However, "original artists" doesn't necessarily mean original recordings, and this collection only features about two or three of those per disc. Some of the original recordings include the Del-Vikings' "Come Go with Me," Frankie Avalon's "Venus," Johnny & the Hurricanes' "Red River Rock," and Phil Phillips' "Sea of Love," all of which still sound good. Nevertheless, with just a handful of genuine articles out of 30 tracks, Original Artists Hits of the 50's is a waste of time and money. ~ Heather Phares

Madacy's Hits of the 50's collection features a variety of well-known artists from the decade. Much like all the other myriad Madacy collections, Love Songs doesn't feature the original recordings of the featured songs, the exceptions being original versions of Cathy Carr's "Ivory Tower" and Frankie Avalon's "Venus." Though the songs on this collection are performed by the original artists, the songs are new stereo recordings rather than the original recordings; however, never do these new versions compare to the original versions, sounding instead somewhat cheap and kitschy. Featured performances include the Platters' "The Great Pretender," Little Richard's "Keep a Knockin'," Bobby Day's "Rockin' Robin," the Drifters' "There Goes My Baby," Lloyd Price's "Stagger Lee," and Johnny Otis' "Willie and the Hand Jive," in addition to several others. ~ Jason Birchmeier Original Artists Hits Of The 50'S Music Original Artists Hits Of The 50'S Music Original Artists Hits Of The 50'S Review

| | T S O L Beneath The Shadows CD (1982)
Original Artists Hits Of The 50'S
$11.49 Though True Sounds of Liberty are on Jello Biafra's Alternative Tentacles label, they should not be misconstrued as hardcore. T.S.O.L. is a terrific rock & roll band which has its own style and unique presentation, a punch that obliterates tired clichés and music without direction. The title track, "Beneath the Shadows," swims in perfect production from Thom Wilson, the slashing guitars finding a bed of other sounds to complement their bite. Jack Delauge's vocals have the right amount of angst and questioning of his plight on that tune as well as on "Walk Alone" on side two. "Soft Focus" opens the disc with a charging blitz which is one part Buzzcocks, two parts T.S.O.L. Where Texans the Delinquents were content to backup Lester Bangs or glorify the B-52's, True Sounds of Liberty really do sound as their name suggests, free from the constraints ...

| | Alisa Fineman Closing The Distance: Poems, Prayers And Love Songs CD (2005)
Original Artists Hits Of The 50'S
$18.99 There's no doubting the talent Alisa Fineman's assembled for this release: Alex de Grassi and Michael Manring are just two of the names helping her out. Their skill and style ensure strong arrangements and a marvelously polished sound. But it also removes all the rawness and grit, giving an evenness to everything, with carefully overlaid layers of vocals and everything just so on this set of mostly traditional Jewish material. Fineman herself is a good singer who knows how to use her voice to great effect, singing in Hebrew, Ladino, and Arabic. The musicians, meanwhile, are eminently tasteful, never overplaying, and leaving plenty of air on the songs. In other words, it's impossible to fault, and it is a good album. But at times it simply seems too polite and lacking in the fire and passion that brings music alive. ~ Chris Nickson
"Alisa's voice is at once delicate and powerful, warm yet mysterious, but above all, it is an open invitation to musicians from diverse traditions to share in the discovery of something new", says Alex de Grassi.Alisa has just completed work on a new CD, one which marks a radical, but also natural, departure from her contemporary personal music. Along with producer Alex de Grassi, Alisa has collected and arranged these traditional Jewish lyrics in a lush setting of world-music instrumentation to showcase the deep musical roots of her cultural heritage."Alisa's CD is a marvelous addition to the contemporary voices who continue to give life and vitality to the Jewish tradition. Alisa's heart is as warm as her superb voice," says Peter Yarrow."Very cool mix of the Jewish Diaspora," says Laney Goodman of NPR's "Women in Music."It has to do with generosity. What makes Alisa's songs stand apart is her own sense and gift of generosity. - Robin Roberts, The Open Road, KUSP, Santa Cruz, CA"National award winning singer-songwriter Alisa Fineman has earned renown for her world-class alto voice with it's dusky tones and original songs." (The Times Independent). She is past winner of the Kerrville NewFolk award at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas, has played at numerous festivals across the country , and her songs appear on many notable CD compilations from across the county. Her newest CD release, "Closing the Distance, Poems, Prayers and Love Songs", is a natural extension of her musical and humanitarian sensibilities.Alisa Fineman grew up in California's San Fernando Valley, born to a family rich in musical heritage. Her great grandfather played first trumpet with the New York Philharmonic under the legendary Toscanini. Her grandmother, a concert pianist, gave Alisa her first piano lessons. At the age of eleven Alisa began learning guitar, ...
