Melancholie/Schubert
$32.85 Dirty Vegas' debut was built around the dreamy, semi-mysterious single "Days Go By," a slick slice of dance-pop that sold a bunch of Mitsubishis and excused the band's shortcomings. Lyrically they were no threat to Dylan, but that didn't matter much when all the pings and pongs echoed gracefully and synths conjured up beautifully detached, nocturnal landscapes. Now they've returned with the heartfelt album One, which is filled with guitars and oh so serious, and delivered by bandmembers who are much better programmers than they are storytellers. There are hints of late-period New Order and Duran Duran on One, but none of the excitement with each wistful and maudlin track blending into the next. "Couldn't help it if I tried," "I can't stop this feeling," "Nothing ever lasts forever," and "The only thing worth living for is love" are just some of the numerous clichés used for the lyrics, and while some tracks are entirely built from them, Dirty Vegas could have just barely pulled it off if they had pulled out the old drum machine. As a guitar-based band, they have no style, and there's no evidence of inspiration guiding the beat combo switchover. One fulfills all of the "faceless" criticisms thrown at them in the past, while alienating whatever fan base they had before. ~ David Jeffries Trading their slick synth pop for guitar-based wistfulness, Dirty Vegas return after two mix albums with the entirely new One. There are hints of late-period New Order and Duran Duran on the album, and barely any of the electronic pings and pongs of the past. They're still dreamy and maudlin, and still not lyricists who will threaten Dylan, but the production is slick and hides the band's shortcomings. ~ David Jeffries ONE is Dirty Vegas's follow-up to their successful debut, which sold well on the basis of the hit single "Days Go By." But Steve Smith, Ben Harris, and Paul Harris have taken a step away from the dance-pop of their first album, moving instead in the direction of guitar-based, radio-friendly pop. Like many of their contemporaries in the mid-2000s, Dirty Vegas worship at the altar of breezy 1980s synth-pop, but ONE bears not a trace of the detached, arty feel of many post-punk-revival bands. Instead, songs like "Roses" and "Home Again" are quite traditional, building on smooth, accessible melodic passages and themes of love and longing in a way that fits Dirty Vegas for adult-contemporary radio. Though Dirty Vegas is largely considered an electronic act, the programming on ONE takes a back seat to Smith, Harris, and Harris's heartfelt songwriting, and, while there are plenty of synthesizers and stylish production flourishes, the album falls firmly in the camp of light, mainstream ...

$14.09 Composer: Ramin Djawadi. Composer: Ramin Djawadi. Arranger: Ramin Djawadi. THE UNBORN is a supernatural thriller directed by David S. Goyer (THE INVISIBLE, BLADE TRINITY), and is awash with creepy imagery of evil spirits and demonic possession, chilling chase, and other disturbing visual effects. Fresh off of his Grammy nomination with 2008's IRON MAN, composer Ramin Djawadi plunges full bore into THE UNBORN, with shrill string arrangements, menacing percussion, and arguably one of the best horror main themes since RE-ANIMATOR. Although the film was not well-received by critics, Djawadi's score stands tall in the pantheon of horror movie music. Composer Ramin Djawadi, who previously worked with director David S. Goyer on Blade: Trinity, rejoins him for The Unborn. Also scripted by Goyer, the film is a sort of Hebrew take on The Exorcist in which a woman is possessed by a dybbuk, with references to the Holocaust thrown in. It's not as prestigious a project as Djawadi's last one, Iron Man (which earned him a Grammy nomination), and the thriller/horror genre limits his opportunities basically to tracking suspense and scary climaxes. His cadential opening theme has a stately grace, but before long he is delving into the Pro Tools trick bag for echoing metallic effects and sudden percussive blasts that sound like somebody sampled heavy machinery being dropped down a flight of stairs. The sonic demands of a film like this have more to do with sound effects, often very loud ones, than with anything easily recognizable as music. Djawadi has done his job here, but the results are not much to be appreciated outside of the movie theater. ~ William Ruhlmann Composer Ramin Djawadi, who previously worked with director David S. Goyer on Blade: Trinity, rejoins him for The Unborn.
