The Wilders present a rather bizarre, though fun, combination of country and folk traditions, freely mixing old songs, acoustic arrangements, and a free-for-all style. "Honky Tonk Habit," for instance, suggests what Hank Williams' "Honky Tonk Blues" might have sounded like if it had been recorded by the Skillet Lickers. While this rather loose approach to tradition will probably offend a number of old-timey purists, this approach actually seems much fresher than yet another version of "Wildwood Flower." The band members, Ike Sheldon, Philip Wade, Nate Gawron, and Betse Ellis, manage to give the impression that they're having a good time, and while most musicians this good do take their music seriously, they sound like they're not taking it too seriously. Sheldon's expressive vocals really shine on "Honky Tonk Habit" and "Belshazzar," while the band's vocal take on Hank Williams' "The Blues Come Around" is feisty enough to get any party started. If this isn't enough to interest a potential buyer of Throw Down, there's an instrumental called "Goat Creek" and an extremely unusual take on "Drivin' Nails in My Coffin." If nothing else, the Wilders offer a glimpse at what the Talking Heads might've sounded like had they played old-timey country and folk. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.
The Wilders: Ike Sheldon (guitar); Philip Wade (banjo); Betse Ellis (fiddle); Nate Gawron (bass instrument).

Throw Down music CDs
$18.99 Recorded live at Cafe Pierre, New York, New York on November 4, 1995. Includes liner notes by Martin Schaeffer.
Recorded live closing a five-week stint at New York's Café Pierre in 1995, this album captures the cabaret act of superlative vocalist Betty Johnson and her daughter Lydia Gray. This is the second album these two have recorded and the third by Johnson since her return from an extended absence from the singing stage. Forsaking a shining career to raise a family, she returned to the footlights in 1993, which was like coming home. Singing since she was a young girl as part of the religious music group the Johnson Family Singers, the versatile Johnson includes folk and country in her repertoire as well as classic and traditional pop standards. Given this impressive background, one might conclude that daughter Lydia Gray would benefit from the talent genes running in the family. Regrettably, not all of those genes made it to Gray. Sporting a rather weak and sometimes wavering voice, she does not compare well with her mother's strong and confident delivery. Gray gives it her all on such tunes as "Shall We Dance" and achieves a respectable level of poignancy on "You Are There." Duets with her mother (such as "Blue Skies" and John Denver's "Country Roads"), while not overwhelming, are pleasant. But one buys this album to hear the mom. An album highlight is her medley of "I Dreamed," "Little White Lies," and "Dream" (featuring some fancy 1950s comping by veteran New York pianist Tony Monte). Her "I'm Confessin'," a vocal loaded with lyrical sensitivity, is sparkling and charged ...

Throw Down CD music
$15.59 Fiddler and singer Andrea Zonn has been doing session work in Nashville since she was 16, and is currently a mainstay of Vince Gill's band. Her first solo album nicely showcases her sweet and mellow voice, while mainly relegating her fiddling to the background (and augmenting it with viola and "chin cello"). She's chosen mostly slow and mid-tempo songs for Love Goes On, which is kind of too bad -- there's nothing wrong with slow songs per se, but the one nagging ...

Throw Down music CDs
$12.65 The story of Violet Wild began long before their first show in July 2006 at Last Exit in Tempe, Arizona where they played in front of what was a lot of doubters with low expectations. The birth of Violet Wild consisted of 3 days on a cruise ship with no way off. Bobby Scott (formerly of Mink Rebellion) and Joshua Kennedy (formerly of the Black Moods) closed the book on their bands and came together with chemistry like nothing they had experienced in their careers. The magic was formed in the middle of the Pacific Ocean in February 2006 and Violet Wild became history in the making. They rushed into the studio to record their first LP and with a rock-n-roll life of only 4 months and no additional members, the LP was recorded by July 2006. Due to uncontrollable circumstances the album was shelved. With determination and hard work, Violet Wild mustered up the means to go back into the studio with accomplished producer Joe Marlett in March of 2007. The band which now had acquired a 3rd member Joey Schwegler on drums began to re-record the album. After diligent work in the studio, the recording was complete. Since their first show in 2006, the band has been signed to Big Panda Music, and is set to release their EP in August of 2007, their full LP worldwide in March of 2008 as well as set out for their US tour in February of 2008. Starting over without the humble comfort of their previous groups, Scott, Kennedy, Schwegler and the newest member, James Grady, are a passionate electrifying force that’s poised only to get ...
