With indie rock acts defecting en masse to the glittery arpeggiated pastures of dance-punk and electro, few bands have taken the opposite course from synth pop to punk rock. The duo of Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller--better known as Adult--have evolved from the crystalline electro sounds of their earlier work, to the strident, malevolent punk of their latest outing WHY BOTHER?
Bristling with harsh, virulent rhythms and dissonant electronics, the music's grinding industrial bombast frames Kuperus's baleful caterwauling--a harrowing, sometimes frightful shriek that commands the songs with a rabid intensity. On the rancorous "Inclined To Vomit" Kuperus spits the hateful invective "you make me disgusted to a painful degree," while walls of synth noise billow like fire-engine sirens. Still, other tracks such as "Plagued By Fear" take a more conventional verse-chorus approach, leavening the punk-noise venom with a tuneful bass hook that's reminiscent of a female-fronted Joy Division. If the legions of trend-hoping indie dance acts hint at glam-pop flourish over musical substance, WHY BOTHER? provides the edgy, experimental alternative to punk-disco's dyed-in-the-wool retro-fetishism.
After expanding to a trio for Gimmie Trouble, Adult. returned to their classic duo lineup for Why Bother? That doesn't mean that Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller have abandoned the wilder, noisier sound they explored on their last album, though -- in fact, Why Bother? is even more radical, pairing dead-calm passages with weird and often downright evil-sounding electronics that recall Throbbing Gristle and Wolf Eyes. This direction is most apparent on the album's instrumentals: parts one and two of "The Importance of Being Folk" are expanses of feral, howling analog noise that suggest fallow pastures, rotten orchards, and other eerie landscapes; "Cultivation"'s strafing synths and the atmospheric yet grinding finale, "Harvest," show the duo's dedication to further folding, spindling, and mutilating their sound. Why Bother?'s deconstructed approach also bleeds into the songs that sound more like Adult.'s earlier work. "Good Deeds" and "Herd Me" -- which both offer witty commentary on groupthink -- bristle with rapid-fire beats and Kuperus' snotty, then scary vocals, remaining danceable while flirting with the chaos elsewhere on the album. Kuperus is in especially rare form on "Inclined to Vomit," where she shrieks and bellows lyrics like "you make me disgusted to a painful degree!" with fury, disgust, and dark, dark humor as synths pulse like a migraine behind her. And though there are fewer guitars on Why Bother? than on Gimmie Trouble or D.U.M.E., Adult.'s mix of punk, industrial, and dance sounds more organic and, well, doomier than it did when they had a full-time guitarist, as "Plagued by Fear"'s low-slung riffs and "You Don't Worry Enough"'s fantastic metallic onslaughts demonstrate. They could've easily stuck to the approach that worked so well on their singles and Anxiety Always, but Adult. keeps finding ways to keep their sound vital. Why Bother? offers fierce, fascinating proof that they'll continue discovering life (or afterlife) in music equally informed by dance and punk. ~ Heather PharesQ (p.116) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Sounding like Siouxise Sioux fronting Suicide....Heavy on paranoia and malignant humour."
CMJ (p.38) - "[They] have become a definitive post-industrial and post-goth-punk group....Its triumph lies in its mood."

Playing like a longer, more streamlined version of the D.U.M.E. EP, Gimmie Trouble continues to explore Adult.'s punk leanings. Though nothing here is quite as unhinged as D.U.M.E., the band -- now a trio, thanks to the addition of guitarist and Tamion 12 Inch member Sam Consiglio -- still finds a lot to explore in that EP's taunting, pitch-black sound, particularly on "Scare Up the Birds" and "In My Nerves." Tracks like the tribal-sounding chant "Disappoint the Youth" and the freezer-burn fury of "Still Waiting" show that Nicola Kuperus remains as gleefully mean-spirited, witty, and paranoid as ever, although her shrieks at the end of "Turn Into Fever" are genuinely fierce. The creepy little backing vocals on "Helen Bach" and the goofy rhythm on "Lovely Love" play up the theatrical and very, very dark sense of humor underlying a lot of Adult.'s later work without sounding too silly or parodic. Somewhat oddly, considering that Consiglio is now a full member of Adult. on this album, his guitars are less prominent here than they were on the EP, and are relegated to textures on most of Gimmie Trouble; indeed, tracks like "Thought I Choked" and "Seal Me In" are some of the band's sparest work in a while. Even though there are no radical changes here, Gimmie Trouble sounds more like Adult. sharpening its edges than running in place. ~ Heather Phares
Thrill Jockey artists Adult. mix electronica with punk energy on this dark, edgy full-length. Like their E.P. D.U.M.E., GIMMIE TROUBLE plays like an angry specter from the early 1980s, channeling such bands as P.I.L. and the Slits, but with vocalist Nicola Kuperus's inventive caterwaul keeping the group's sound utterly distinctive. Using eerie synth patterns, textural guitar, and shuddering, often

Black, the deeper, harder, faster shade of Bargrooves, encompasses 28 tracks of driving electro-edged Dance music mixed by Ben Sowton and Deeplay's Martin Brodin. Featuring tracks from 'Def E, Marshall Jefferson, Terry Lee Brown Jr., G-Club and others. This collection introduces a new tougher, darker side to the Bargrooves sound. Think bittersweet flavors that seduce and caress before they kick back like a mule. This is the soundtrack to sultry soirees that go deep into the night (or should we say early morning) where the lights are down low, the music is loud and you lose yourself in a maze of tech-edged beats and deliciously twisted Electronica. It's a little risqu‚ too, of course, but still retains that all-important soulful quality. Seamless. 2006.

Of the five "authorized bootleg" Soul Coughing albums released in 2007 by the Kufala label, this one is the most frustrating. For one thing, it's considerably shorter than the others at about 60 minutes spread over two discs. But since the list price is $12.00, that's a minor quibble. More important is the disconnection between musical quality and sonic quality. Although all of the Kufala discs sound substantially better than most actual bootleg recordings, this one is more muffled and distant than the others, and that's especially frustrating because so many of the performances at this concert were ferociously good. The band's version of "Bus to Beelzebub," usually a solid winner in a live setting, is positively blistering here, and this rendition of "Sugar Free Jazz" squashes the studio version like a grape. "Blue Eyed Devil" (another song that tends to thrive on-stage) is given a rollicking performance that incorporates gleefully snide quotes from "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town" and "I Will Always Love You." Perhaps best of all, though, is a swinging and extra-funky arrangement of "Uh, Zoom Zip" near the end of the set. "The Woolly Imbibe" is a nice surprise, a non-album track that seems to have come out of nowhere. If the sound were sharper and fuller, this would qualify on its own as one of Soul Coughing's finest albums. ~ Rick Anderson
