Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds have been legends so long it is easy to forget there's a reason for it. Despite the 2004 departure of Bad Seed stalwart Blixa Bargeld, Cave turned in his best album in years--ABATTOIR BLUES--and this two-CD/two-DVD package finds him taking this inspired set on the road with periodic dips into the band's legendary back catalog. The DVD footage centers on two concerts: one at the Brixton Academy in London on November 11th, 2004, and one from an earlier tour at the Hammersmith Apollo from June 7th, 2003, that features a few songs from NOCTURAMA. There are also promotional videos and backstage tidbits that make this set a must-own for Nick Cave fans.
This set features songs from the critically acclaimed 2004 double album Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus, plus an arrays of classic material from the band's repertoire. The 2 CDs contain live recordings from various dates on the 2004 Abattoir Blues concerts at London's Brixton Academy (November 11, 2004); the 2nd disc offers excerpts from London's Hammersmith Apollo show filmed during the 2003 Nocturama tour. The DVDs also include all the promotional videos from the last 2 albums plus special bonus behind the scenes footage of a video shoot.
Nick Cave: Nick Cave (vocals, piano); Mick Harvey (guitar); Warren Ellis (violin); Conway Savage (piano); James Johnston (organ); Martyn Casey (bass guitar); Jim Sclavunos, Thomas Wydler (drums, percussion). Abattoir Blues Tour Music Nick Cave Abattoir Blues Tour Songs Abattoir Blues Tour Review

| | Dickies All This And Puppet Stew CD (2001)
Abattoir Blues Tour music CDs
$11.39 Only their sixth album of original material in 24 years (ahh, the productivity of heroin addiction!), All This and Puppet Stew proves the Dickies are at least incapable of making a bad one. They broke half their formula on the previous two records, dropping the sidesplitting comedy that made their first four LPs ageless gases. They'll never banish the glorious power pop punk that's forever been their hallmark, but the bandmembers now care about making more genial loud guitar pop as scintillating as the stack of 1960s records they cherish. "Marry Me, Ann," "I Did It," and "Huge" all reach back for the hummable, lovable, heart-tug-able greatness of their old Quick cover, "Pretty Please Me." Stan Lee still keeps the fat power riffs coming, and Leonard Phillips wraps his thick, boyish, goofy-sweet voice around the abundant melodies with his voluble charm. There's nothing about hunchbacks, pagodas, Asian TV anchorwomen, gorillas, Sammy Davis, Jr., the Pep Boys, waterslides, cholos, zombies, the Germs' bassist, mole men, talking penises, or even covers of cartoon themes, but there are some clever/funny-dumb songs in "Wack the Dalai Lama," "He's Courtin' Courtney" (ha ha!), and the first-rate "My Pop the Cop." Meanwhile, the Dickies-ized covers this time are "See My Way," "Donut Man," and the Human Beinz hit "Nobody But Me." The next album should be released in, oh....six years, 11 months, 21 days, 17 hours, and nine minutes. (Fans will get that, from the joke Phillips tells about the precise length he's been free of drugs, before saying, "Just kidding!") That they've somehow managed to exist uninterrupted -- however sporadically -- for a quarter century with this sort of quality control in the studio, and that they've done it despite some unfortunate personal habits, is as much a marvel as their LPs are so enjoyable. ~ Jack Rabid

| | Oneida Anthem Of The Moon CD (2001)
Abattoir Blues Tour songs
$12.19 It's a bold move for any band to call their album ANTHEM OF THE MOON, in obvious reference to the Dead's classic ANTHEM OF THE SUN, but one thing Brooklyn's Oneida has never lacked is guts, making them one of the few bands that can pull off anything so brazen.
ANTHEM is more straightforward than much of Oneida's material, flaunting a louder, broader, and brawnier side. Drumming wunderkind ...
| | Peter Case Who's Gonna Go Your Crooked Mile? CD (2004)
Abattoir Blues Tour album
$14.55 Peter Case has been consistently making great records since the Plimsouls first went into a recording studio in 1980, and while his solo albums for Vanguard Records haven't received the same degree of attention as his first two sets for Geffen (Peter Case and The Man With the Blue Postmodern Fragmented Neo-Traditionalist Guitar, arguably his best and best-known records), it's certainly not a matter of his work not being up to snuff. Who's Gonna Go Your Crooked Mile? is a compilation album that presents three new tracks alongside 13 songs culled from the albums Torn Again, Full Service No Waiting, Flying Saucer Blues, and Beeline, and if you want a potent reminder of just how good a songwriter Case is, and how well he can make his material work in the studio, this album offers the evidence in spades. From the clean-lined character study of "Spell of Wheels" to the wild shaggy dog story of "Two Heroes," Case is a born storyteller who can get the details of a whole life down in three or four minutes, and his musical instincts range from the rockabilly sway of "Coulda Woulda Shoulda," the lean folkie warmth of "Blind Luck," and the blues-infused stomp of "Two Heroes" while all reflecting his sharp but open-hearted personality. And the new material proves the guy still has the goods, with the new live recording of the title track showing that Case remains a potent and passionate live performer ...
