Audio Mixer: Jim Bottari. Recording information: The Dustbowl, Philadelphia, PA. Having departed from the Def Jux label, the DJ/producer/turntablist behind the indie rap outfit Mhz and former golden boy of El-P's label, has also made a marked departure from his previous work on this 2007 release. The Columbus, Ohio, native's third solo album sees him personally handling all the instrumentation (vocals, too) in a 15-track moody pop effort that takes more cues from Blur and Beck than from Cut Chemist or DJ Shadow. Give Rjd2 credit -- he certainly couldn't have moved from undie rap to indie pop without believing in the music he's making. It's no wonder he felt he had to move from Definitive Jux, the home of Aesop Rock and Murs, to XL, the home of Thom Yorke and Lemon Jelly, to have any hope of being taken seriously. And while there's no hint of hip-hop anywhere here, The Third Hand is a surprisingly natural mix of his beat-heavy productions and kaleidoscopic tastes with reflective songwriting and plaintive vocals. Sample spotters beware, everything on the record was written, produced, and most importantly, performed by Rjd2 in his home studio. So, after the gigantic mind shift required to reflect on a record that needs to be compared to Broadcast rather than Blueprint, it has to be admitted that Rjd2 is onto something here. His vocals are thin but tuneful, and he has a knack for good harmonies. His productions still overwhelm the songs, reflecting the requirements of hip-hop instead of pop, but they're far better than what's found on the majority of indie pop records. Two skills he has mastered in the past, mood and texture, make this record especially good; witness the transitions from the quiet short-form piece "Someday" into the wide-ranging instrumental "The Bad Penny" into the highlight of the record, "Beyond the Beyond." [An instrumental version of the album also appeared in 2007.] ~ John BushQ (p.122) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "'Reality' has echoes of both Elbow and Beck, while the excellent 'Have Mercy' chugs along like a Funkadelic version of the Eagles. An unexpected treat." Alternative Press (p.192) - 4.5 stars out of 5 -- "Musically, RJ still feeds us with flourishes of hip-hop....The record is doused with warm synths, acoustic guitars and bits of piano." CMJ (p.40) - "Underneath the squelching, glossy keyboards and laid-back, blue-eyed soul vocals, the emphasis is still on rhythm." RJD2 Third Hand Songs | 1. | Intro |

| Third Hand Music Review Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) WOW Amazing album with an unique touch to it. Submitted by Eric Jay (Crooksville, Kentucky) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful.
as an artist grows.. I really have to give it up on this one. Not what I expected, but it blew me away. To discredit this album is to dicredit RJ's undeniable ability to reinvent his sound with every album. I am waiting to see what the next project brings. Not a fan of this album.... This album is a very big departure of RJ's previous work. Although there are a 1 or 2 diamonds in the rough, there are too few gems to enjoy this album as a whole. The well known punchy RJ beats of yore have been mostly lulled to an inexcusably slow tempo backdrop to make way for mediocre guitar licks and keyboard melodies that faintly resemble RJ's previous work, but fall short of how catchy his previous work has been. If you are a huge fan of the Hip-Hop production work that RJD2 has been famous for, you will only like Beyond the Beyond and maybe Bad Penny; only those two tracks. As for the rest, they are mostly too boring and too dry to get more than a couple listens. Submitted by Michael (Chicago, IL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

| | Public Enemy There's A Poison Goin' On... CD (1999)
Third Hand
$9.79 This reissue contains 5 bonus tracks. Public Enemy: Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Terminator X, Professor Griff. Additional personnel: Kyle Jason (vocals). Recorded in 1999. Includes liner notes by Chuck D. Personnel: Professor Griff (vocals, spoken vocals); Flavor Flav, Kyle Jason, Chuck D (vocals); DJ President Ike (turntables). Audio Mixers: DJ Johnny Juice; G-Wiz; The Nextmen. Audio Remixer: C Doc. Liner Note Author: Chuck D. Recording information: The Icehouse, Long Island, NY. Opening with a sonic collage straight out of Fear of a Black Planet, There's a Poison Goin' On... comes out of the gates sounding like classic Public Enemy, which is exactly what Public Enemy intended, since their slight sonic change-up on He Got Game didn't result in a hit. In a way, PE's feud with Def Jam over downloadable MP3 music was a good thing, since it brought them media attention, which is rare for a veteran hip-hop band. Such increased exposure also brought a minor controversy over "Swindlers Lust," which some perceived as anti-Semitic, but this outrage was isolated because Public Enemy was now at the margins of hip-hop. They were no longer considered cutting-edge, and younger kids never picked up their records, so the only place for this controversy to reside was among the rock critics and aging fans who remembered when It Takes a Nation of Millions changed the world ten years prior. Chuck D must have known that they would be the only ones paying attention to the album, since it consciously copies PE's past and never really breaks from that blueprint. In some respects, that's a disappointment, since He Got Game showed that PE could subtly incorporate modern hip-hop and do it better than some modern acts. But There's a Poison Goin' On is nevertheless a strong album, even if it is doggedly classicist. It's also dogmatic, with Chuck preaching to the converted about the evils of the record industry and conformity in hip-hop, which does become a little trying by the end of the record. But he delivers lyrically and PE delivers musically, ...
