While Brooklyn Afrobeat traditionalists Antibalas certainly aren't mere Fela Kuti imitators, they've always hewed fairly closely to the legendary Nigerian musician's aesthetic blueprint. SECURITY (2007), however, finds the band expanding its musical palette without losing any of its political fire (see the blunt anti-G.O.P. workout "Filibuster X"). Producer John McEntire (Tortoise) handles production duties and adds weight and atmosphere to the band's urgent sound. And, while Antibalas still rely on classic Afrobeat instrumentation, they also throw in some previously untapped left-field synthesizer sounds (see I.C.E.), as well as more complex song structures. All of this would be for naught, though, if the key element of the Antibalas experience weren't still firmly in place; thankfully, the band continues to work that righteous groove, one capable of whipping anyone into a revolutionary frenzy.

Rolling Stone (p.80) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "The twelve-member-plus collective's fourth album offers jazzy Afro-Latin jams that are intricately assembled and totally rock in spots." Spin (p.86) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Filibuster 'X' and 'War Hero' channel the fierce individualism of Fela Kuti and Gil Scott-Heron." Magnet (p.94) - "SECURITY brings new elements to the mix without compromising Antibalas' fundamental power. The propulsive guitar figures, layered drum grooves and wall-flattening horn charts are intact..." CMJ (p.38) - "The dozen-member eclectic collage of musicians has been genre-proof for a decade, and on SECURITY, they dodge between Afrobeat, bossa nova, funk, jazz and hip-hop." Down Beat (p.72) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Antibalas has taken the foundation laid by Kuti and done some remodeling....The band's fourth full-length album explores new, less frantic ways to expand beyond the lock step of Afrobeat." Dirty Linen (p.92) - "[A] percolating mixture of Afrobeat, 70s funk, and Latin vibes....It's lush and the horn harmonies resonate..." The Beat (Magazine) (p.24) - "It's always been striking to hear this band....Probably the closest release yet to capturing the power of their live shows." Purchase Security CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Karl Denson Bridge CD (2002)
Security album
$12.59 Additional personnel includes: Saul Williams, Michael Franti (vocals);
Roy Hargrove (trumpet); Fred Wesley (trombone); Lonnie Smith (organ).
The Bridge is a fairly straightforward document of Karl Denson's live performance. Though there are plenty of guests on the disc -- including poet and activist Michael Franti, poet Saul Williams, funk trombonist Fred Wesley, and jazz trumpeter Roy Hargrove -- that's not too unusual for Denson and company. Denson himself regularly turns up on others' stages and just as frequently invites guests to sit in with his own Tiny Universe. The music is ...
| | Galactic Ruckus CD (2003)
Security CD music
$12.05 On their fourth studio album proper -- Vintage Reserve was a best-of, and We Love 'Em Tonight was a live offering -- Galactic wholeheartedly move not so much away from their past as a bad-ass New Orleans jazz & roll concern, as they move toward another of its traditions: Voodoo funk. There is a twist though. Not merely content to grasp the Mardi Gras Indians or Dr. John esthetics, Galactic points firmly toward the technological present with their primordial groove machine music. Drummer Stanton Moore uses as many loops as he does organic drums, bass, bass, and more bass is the order of the day, and strange keyboard sounds come bubbling under like some lost Lee Perry session gone digital. Does that make this a techno or an electronica record? C'mon. Ruckus is a spooky ride to the other side of midnight. The party is either gonna break out or break up; it exists on the edge of that fine distinction, that moment in time when anything is possible. And possibility is what Ruckus is all about: simmering ...
| | Seattle Women's Jazz Orchestra Dreamcatcher CD (2004)
Security music CDs
$12.95 The mostly all-female Seattle Women's Jazz Orchestra is a solid stage band that plays straight-ahead jazz. Few surprises occur in the arrangements but one could imagine this band being fun to see in concert. Greta Matassa is impressive during her two vocals ("Fly Me To The Moon" and "As Long As I'm Singing") and the best soloists are tenor-saxophonist ...
| | John Butler Sunrise Over Sea CD (2004) Digipak
Security songs
$10.65 The John Butler Trio's U.S. debut album, Sunrise Over Sea, is phenomenal -- from the opening notes of "Treat Yo Mama," a muscular and soulfully expressive roots rocker, to the final strains of the expansive, ten-minute-long opus "Sometimes." The John Butler Trio is arguably the best musical group Australia has to offer in 2005, and Butler's superb, bluesy riffs and innovative melodies are only part of the JBT musical equation. The sturdy rhythm section of Shannon Birchall (on bass) and Michael Barker (on drums) gives added life to hit contenders like the powerful "Company Sin" and the buoyant, breezy "Better Man." If the mid-album blues vignette "Damned to Hell" seems an ill fit at first, its lo-fi, banjo-strummed presentation shifts effortlessly ...
| | J J Grey & Mofro Country Ghetto CD (2007)
Security album
$14.39 The Florida singer-songwriter JJ Grey and his band Mofro play a swampy mix of country, rock, and R&B that's not a million miles removed from the vintage Muscle Shoals Southern soul sounds of the late 1960s and early '70s. The band's sound is fat and greasy, augmented by horns and haunted-sounding ...
| | M I A Kala CD (2007)
Security CD music
$9.99 Even before M.I.A. (Maya Arulpragasam) debuted in 2005 with ARULAR, the blogosphere was already abuzz about her, engaging in the kind of discourse normally reserved for academic dissertations. Whether hailed as a canny postmodern pastiche or dismissed as inauthentic cultural pirating, ...

| | Sword Age Of Winters CD (2006)
Security CD music
$9.49 Coming to grips with the Sword's unlikely genesis in the alternative music Mecca of Austin, TX, leads one to wonder whether heavy metal has finally become hip again. Depending on your generation, nothing will seem as simultaneously preposterous (Gen-X'ers who came of age during pop-metal's heyday and don't recognize ...
