| | Circus Disco Vol. 2 Mixed CD
Los Angeles' Circus Disco was a haven for electronic post-disco, music largely made by Europeans (Italians especially) with undying love for fluorescent melodies and bouncing rhythms. This, the second retrospective Circus Disco Mix, was put together by the club's 1978-1986 DJ, Martin Rodriguez, so there is no doubting its legitimacy. Given the inclusions -- Kano's "Now Baby Now," Roni Griffith's "The Best Part of Breaking Up," Magnifique's "Magnifique," Sylvester's "Dance Disco Heat," Fun Fun's "Color My Love," Cut Glass' "Without Your Love" -- it's no surprise that the energy level is high throughout, shining a spotlight on the links between disco and house. ~ Andy Kellman

Circus Disco Vol. 2 Mixed songs
$10.09 Dennis Driscoll's Mysterium Mysterium just might be to '60s AM pop and post-doo wop what Spinal Tap is to pop-metal, GWAR is to thrash metal and Gerry House is to honky tonk -- in other words, a total parody of the style that he is focusing on. If the singer/songwriter didn't bring a huge dose of irony to this CD, it would be easy to rip Mysterium Mysterium to shreds. His oddly boyish singing is badly out of tune, and his lyrics are as trite, clichéd and naïve as they are sophomoric. Think of the corniest, most adolescent lyrics that plagued AM radio in the early to mid-'60s -- people who wanted to be the Everly Brothers but didn't have a fraction of their talent -- and you will have an idea what Driscoll's lyrics are like. Then there's the matter of the production; Mysterium Mysterium sounds like a poorly produced homemade demo. So why would anyone want to own a CD with so many "flaws?" Because the "flaws" aren't really flaws -- they're effective tools in Driscoll's creative pop/rock arsenal. Again, the whole thing is obviously meant to parody of the bad side of '60s AM pop, which Driscoll is mocking; his out-of-tune vocals and innocent lyrics are delivered in a very ironic way. And if his goal was to provide an album that is so bad that it's good, he's succeeded. One doesn't necessarily need to hear five or six more albums from Driscoll -- after a few tracks, listeners get the joke. But Driscoll is entertaining -- for a while, anyway -- and students of pop culture should get a good laugh out of this amusing novelty item. ~ Alex Henderson
Dennis Driscoll (born in 1977) grew up between West Seattle, Washington (where he'd play Atari games and space LEGOs) and Oysterville, Washington (which is by the Pacific Ocean) where he'd play space LEGOs and ride his tricycle. In 1988 Driscoll's parents moved to Ilwaco, Washington (by Oysterville). It was then that Driscoll went through the sheer hell of having to go to Ilwaco High School. The 1990s were a bad time for Driscoll. You could either be a prep, a jock, a stoner or just a total loser. Driscoll started out being a 'jock' but eventually just decided to become a 'stoner' except he didn't really get into drugs. He just basically acted very strangely. Showing up to High School in a bathrobe and such. It was then that Driscoll got turned on to some good bands by Kurt Cobain of the band Nirvana. Not that Driscoll knew Cobain... (quote) 'I just saw him on TV' says Driscoll 'and I didn't even know Nirvana were from the Northwest at the time' 'I was actually more into Weird Al's parody of Nirvana than Nirvana itself around the time Nevermind came out' 'I was a total comic book dork' 'I was really glad to find Olympia, WA in 1997 thanks to a Nirvana book. It pretty much saved my life. I found Elliott Smith's 45s for 'Division Day' and 'Angeles' and thought that those were quite amazingly written songs. ' 'I was really influenced by Elliott Smith and the Beatles of course'. 'I just wanted to make music like that' 'my songs always come out more sappy than Elliott Smith's though' (end quote). Driscoll released the LP Mysterium Mysterim in 2003. It is a collection of recordings ...
