| | Paulson All At Once CD Paulson Discography of CDs
Paulson's first album, Variations, was an occasionally off-putting mix of post-rock noodling and emo neediness, neither "difficult" enough to be a challenging listen nor attractive enough to entice listeners past its more abstruse moments. Dropped from Initial Records after that effort, the band underwent a musical reorganization, signed with a smaller label, and delivered a far superior second effort. All At Once won't sound particularly new or different to anyone even passingly acquainted with the whole post-Pinkerton school of pop emo, but unlike on their debut, Paulson here sounds like a band committed to their music and wanting to make a more direct, focused album than before. Shorter and less meandering than before, the songs are built as much on Mike Smeen's droning synth lines as they are Jesse Burton's newly restrained guitar lines, and singer Logan Laflotte is working in a more relaxed, less angsty register. The results are much more pleasing to the ear, but there's still a heard-it-all-before element to even the best songs here. In much the same way that the album cover art is a blatant but not very well-done theft of Japanese cult visual artist Takashi Murakami's signature playful/creepy silk-screens of DNA-mutated cartoon characters, the songs are clever but unremarkable nods to other, better artists. ~ Stewart Mason

| | Guther Sundet CD (2006) Digipak
All At Once music CDs
$12.59 Vocalist Julie Guther has a voice which can easily carry a song or emotion. And assisted by multi-instrumentalist Berend Intelmann, Guther (also the name of the group) are able to create very smart, highbrow pop as they do with the ambling "Still in This Town," which could be mistaken for Björk fronting the Beautiful South. It's a dreamy, catchy opener which leads flawlessly into the up-tempo adult contemporary sounds of "Statements," which brings to mind a very rowdy Nico or Dido. Meanwhile, Guther branch out slightly with the alternative rock ditty "Many Frames Per Moment" that has some angular rock moments in it and a flute thrown in for good ...
| | Bonnie 'Prince' Billy Letting Go CD (2006)
All At Once songs
$12.69 Like 2003's MASTER AND EVERYONE, THE LETTING GO is a quiet, introspective record that examines the human heart, but the songs here equal or better those on its excellent predecessor. Oldham's insight into the politics of self and relationships is unflinching, and his wordplay--which balances surreal poetry with heartbreaking confessionals--is at its peak. Sonically, THE LETTING GO is expansive, adding strings, subtle percussion, and ambient effects that enhance but never crowd the songs. ...
| | Susan Boyle I Dreamed A Dream CD (2009)
All At Once album
$9.58 Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Miserables - the very song that lends this album its title -- and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's appeal is that she's a middle-aged woman recalling a bygone era when there were singers that appealed to an adult audience by offering soft, stately versions of pop hits and standards. That time was the late `60s and early `70s, and apart from a rather faithful version of Madonna's "You'll See," I Dreamed a Dream could very well have been released all those years ago, as it mixes up the show tunes, gospel, and Christmas carols with covers of Skeeter Davis' "The End of the World," the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses," and a version of "Daydream Believer" that is easily the slowest on record. Boyle sings beautifully throughout, delivering more of the same of what she did in her moment in the sun on television. Those won over by Boyle, either her voice or story, will surely be satisfied. ~ Stephen ...
| | Jimmy Buffett Buffet Hotel CD (2009)
All At Once CD music
$9.74 Since Jimmy Buffett never leaves his comfort zone, it's hard to call 2009's Buffet Hotel a return to roots but, in a way, it is. Discounting the mock rap on "Turn Up the Heat and Chill the Rosé," this album doesn't even have the lingering country and reggae flavors that seasoned 2006's Take the Weather with You, with all of the songs riding a cool, mellow country-rock wave, the kind that has been his stock-in-trade since the `70s. ...
