Conor Oberst continues his quest to be the new Lee Hazlewood as his Team Love label follows the country revivalism of Jenny Lewis's stellar RABBIT FUR COAT with the release of this Americana-inflected gem. McCarthy Trenching--the performing name of Omaha's Dan McCarthy--compiles beautifully understated tracks from his first two unreleased records for his Team Love debut. On MCCARTHY TRENCHING he sounds like a sunnier Townes Van Zandt, inheriting the rustic wit and tender melodic gifts of the Texas legend, but not the often harrowing melancholy. And that's not a bad thing, as under the self-torture Van Zandt was a melody maker of extraordinary ease. And so is Dan McCarthy on this stunningly self-assured debut.

| | Through The Sparks Lazarus Beach CD (2007)
Mccarthy Trenching CD music
$9.79 Alabama indie band Through the Sparks produce a stew of ramshackle but ear-pleasing guitar pop on Lazarus Beach. There's something likable yet wobbly about Through the Sparks' quirky vision, but when they are able to right themselves (like a child's first unsteady ride on a bicycle), they offer up bright and sophisticated moments, such as on the lounge-lite, bouncy "Mexico (Every Last Buffalo)," which seems to decry the imperialism of yuppie housing developments against moaning organ and a well-intentioned (if slightly sloppy) reverbed guitar run. "L. Roi" takes up more serious matters, offering up a tale of suicide against a slightly smudged but altogether bright musical landscape. Everything is a little rough around the edges on this home brew of eccentric indie pop, but the bright moments shine enough to expose the strong collective ...

| | Angels Of Light We Are Him CD (2007)
Mccarthy Trenching songs
$12.79 WE ARE HIM, the fifth long-player from Angels of Light, is wholly uncategorizable, and features Gira chasing far-flung muses from Beefheart stomps ("My Brother's Man") to dirgy semi-ragas ("Promise of Water"), to almost traditional pop ("Good Bye Mary Lou.") The constants throughout are delicate arrangements, odd structures, and Gira's mesmerizingly laconic baritone. There are familiar touchstones here--synth-era Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave's solo work to name two--but Gira is an original and WE ARE HIM is weird American noir that sounds like nothing else on earth.
Michael Gira continued to atone for years of ...
| | Lcd Soundsystem 45:33:00 CD (2006) Bonus Tracks
Mccarthy Trenching album
$13.09 LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy was commissioned by Nike to write "45:33:00" as a piece of exercise music for part of their Original Run series. Murphy composed the track as a continuous piece tailored to the length and variation of a standard workout. In addition to its novelty as a concept, "45:33:00" is a brilliantly arranged and compulsively listenable track spilling over with the burbling, kinetic energy and gleaming production flourishes typical of LCD Soundsystem's ...
| | Jenny Lewis Acid Tongue CD (2008)
Mccarthy Trenching CD music
$12.19 After the surprising alt-country feel of Rilo Kiley lead singer Jenny Lewis's debut solo album, RABBIT FUR COAT, her band released their most eclectic and self-assured album, 2007's UNDER THE BLACKLIGHT. Lewis's second solo album, ACID TONGUE, neatly synthesizes the best aspects of both those albums with a newfound breeziness of spirit. The 11 songs swing easily from the rockabilly twang of "The Next Messiah" to the sensuous, swirling "Bad Man's World," with the soulful piano ballad, "Trying My Best To Love You," and the noisy rock and roll clatter of "Jack Killed Mom" particularly standing out. Elvis Costello appears on the title track and "Carpetbagger," returning the favor of Lewis's guest vocals on his 2008 album MOMOFUKU. In fact, that Costello album, recorded quickly and with a minimum of studio trickery, is as much of a touchstone for the loose, live-in-the-studio sound of ACID TONGUE as any of Lewis's other recent projects. Other guests include Chris Robinson ...
| | Face To Face Don't Turn Away CD (1992)
Mccarthy Trenching music CDs
$6.69 Considered by many fans to be a classic, this debut on Fat Wreck Chords (originally released on Doctor Strange, with only a few thousand copies shipped before the company went out of business) qualifies as a '90s punk must-have. The first (and by far the rawest) of three Face to Face recordings to include alt-rock radio mega-hit "Disconnected," this 13-track disc reveals a band on the brink of punk stardom. Don't Turn Away features original members Matt Riddle on bass, Rob Kurth on drums, and singer/guitarist Trevor Keith -- the one constant in what would become an ever-shifting lineup. Keith demonstrates a powerful, well-defined voice, along with a strong commitment to his material -- carefully avoiding the fake British accent snottiness that many of his mid-'90s pop-punk contemporaries found hard to resist. Providing excellent backing for their leader's trademark creations, the rhythm section stays in control and out of the way throughout most of Don't Turn Away. The band's enthusiasm gets the best of them during slower material that sounds uneven at times, but many fans might consider such caffeinated quirks endearing and forgive the unpleasantries when the trio rips through studio versions of upbeat concert favorites "You've Done Nothing" and "Pastel." ...
| | Excelsis: A Dark Noel CD (2007)
Mccarthy Trenching songs
$12.69 To say there's a slight bit of discographical confusion over this release is to understate. The Projekt label had released three separate end-of-year holiday compilations through the late '90s and into the next decade plus some singles in 2004, all featuring both acts on the label itself as well as various associated performers distributed by the label. The original A Dark Noel compilation, released in 2003 as a cross-promotion with Hot Topic, cherry-picked from those three discs, included otherwise unavailable cuts and in all provided a handy summary both of Projekt's sound and how Christmas songs and themes could be reworked in a myriad of ways. Four years later, the new A Dark Noel -- featuring a similar cover photo but a reworked overall design -- is itself a new release, almost but not quite the same as the original. While both have 12 tracks, the track listing is completely different to begin with, with the new disc starting with Arcanta's magisterial vocal-only take on "Carol of the Bells" -- itself not included on the original compilation. Notable tracks that appeared ...
