For one brief shining moment in the early 1960s, Gerry & the Pacemakers rivaled the Beatles in popularity and acclaim, but even as their stardust faded, they continued to write and perform some stunning pop songs. This thorough compilation contains all of their best material, the highlight of which is the classic Mersey-beat hit "Ferry Cross the Mersey." | | Lovin Spoonful Hums Of The Lovin' Spoonful CD (1966)
An Introduction To Gerry & The Pacemakers
$9.79 Originally released on Kama Sutra (8054). Includes liner notes by Dennis Diken.
Having recorded four albums (one of which was the soundtrack WHAT'S UP TIGER LILY?) in slightly over a year, the band was on a shockingly strong roll here (which began to unravel after the release of HUMS, when Zal Yanovsky left). Then all of 22-years old, John Sebastian penned all the songs for HUMS. The album opens with "Lovin' You," a perfect confluence of pop and jugband music, and it closes with their biggest hit, "Summer In the City." In between are the classics "Rain On The Roof" and "Nashville Cats," along with a host of lesser-known, but no less ingratiating numbers from the short-lived but prolific ...

| | John Mellencamp Human Wheels CD (1993) Bonus Track; Remastered
An Introduction To Gerry & The Pacemakers
$7.55 On his previous albums, John Mellencamp always infused his heartland rock with a hopefulness and party spirit that kept his paeans to the trials of the working man from becoming bleak. Not so here--if those discs were gritty rock & roll efforts, then HUMAN WHEELS is the artist's dark, confessional singer/songwriter record. Here swaggering, power-chord-driven bombast and anthemic choruses are often replaced by gently strummed mandolin, organ swells, and whispered, elegant verse. There are also hints of things to come--"Junior" and "French Shoes" are driven by dance rhythms that ...

| | Lio Amour Toujours CD (1983)
An Introduction To Gerry & The Pacemakers
$14.59 Having made an initial splash on her first two albums with sprightly dancefloor pop, as well as an initial attempt to look to English-language audiences, on Amour Toujours Lio often took a calmer road that harked back to earlier styles of French music, a move slightly paralleled in the classy cover photo courtesy of the legendary Robert Doisneau. Still, Amour Toujours is hardly simply a re-creation of the past -- producer Alain Chamfort had an ear for then state-of-the-art radio-friendly sounds, as the full thwack of the drums on "La Reine des Pommes" makes clear from the start. But for all the immediate airwave appeal, it's quite striking both how Lio sounds a little smoother and more confident on many tracks and how various orchestral and other instruments interweave with the straight-up rock sounds throughout. The sudden brass break toward the end of "La Vérité Toute Nue," the concluding strings on the moody highlight "J'Aime un Fantôme," and the piano on "Je Voudrais Bien Me Sentir Mal" all highlight this tendency well, and Lio's performances are appropriately top-notch. At points Chamfort creates a full-on retro background -- there's nothing but strings and brass on the near waltz-time "Grenade," while the piano-led, easily swinging "Plus Je T'Embrasse" is a pure delight. Meantime, songs like the almost ska-paced "Zip a Doo Wah" show that the total kineticism of her earlier work has hardly gone away, and is merely directed toward other goals. As part of the 2006 reissue, an extended version of "Zip a Doo Wah" is included, as well as other ...
