Standard Screen; Soundtrack English Hailing from the musically fertile climes of Portland, Oregon, the indie-rock band the Decemberists weave complex, literary narratives (courtesy of singer/songwriter Colin Meloy) through layers of chiming, acoustic-based folk-rock. A PRACTICAL HANDBOOK presents a wealth of material for Decemberists fans, including a full-length concert performed at Portland's Roseland Theater on November 4, 2005; five music videos (including the four-part, animated video for "The Tain"); and the documentary short PARIS BEFORE THE WAR.

Decemberists - A Practical Handbook review
$11.99 The minor-key opener "Leslie Anne Levine" announces the band's m.o.: this is moody, sensitive music that spins yarns of the downtrodden and outcast. Shifting, multi-part epics like "Odalisque" offer a counterpoint to streamlined rock-influenced tunes like "July, July!," and it doesn't get any better than "Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect," featuring Meloy's beautiful, image-rich lyrics and a melody that melts in the mind. From its admirable songcraft to its haunting arrangements, CASTAWAYS AND CUTOUTS holds up to repeated listenings, and adds up to one of the best indie pop debuts of the era.
With CASTAWAYS AND CUTOUTS, their 2002 debut, the Decemberists established themselves as one of the most noteworthy ...
| | Frank Zappa - The Dub Room Special DVD (1982)
Decemberists - A Practical Handbook DVD
$11.79 Starting in 1974 and continuing for nearly a decade, Frank Zappa's annual Halloween concerts were a New York City institution. When the avant-rocker scored a Top 40 hit with "Valley Girl" in 1982, he skipped that year's Halloween performance and instead chose to premiere a 90-minute documentary called FRANK ZAPPA'S DUB ROOM at New York's Ritz Theater. Produced, directed, written, conducted, composed, arranged, and performed by Zappa, the documentary was comprised of two concerts--the 1981 Halloween show at the Palladium, and the December 1974 KCET television special, A TOKEN OF HIS EXTREME--as well as animation by claymation artist and longtime Zappa collaborator, Bruce Bickford. Released on home video in 1982, the Dub Room special has long remained a hard-to-find rarity, but this program rewards Zappa devotees with a presentation of the documentary in its entirety (albeit ...
| | Sufjan Stevens Avalanche: Outtakes & Extras From The Illinois Album CD (2006)
Decemberists - A Practical Handbook movie DVD
$12.45 Primarily recorded in late 2005/early '06, THE AVALANCHE serves as a companion piece to Sufjan Stevens's lauded ILLINOIS, and shares the brightly melodic chamber-pop sound of that earlier release. On this 21-track offering, the Brooklyn-based indie-rock hero revisits his lilting "Chicago" on three different occasions, most notably an acoustic version that showcases Stevens's folk leanings. The gentle-voiced performer also nods to Prairie State luminaries on the woodwind-laced "Adlai Stevenson" and the delicate "Saul Bellow," a track that strongly recalls Stevens's esteemed peer Sam Beam (aka Iron & Wine). Since he has focused on ...

Decemberists - A Practical Handbook video
$11.29 In 2006, the Decemberists unveiled their Capitol Records debut, THE CRANE WIFE, after three albums for the indie label Kill Rock Stars. Happily, the revered Portland, Oregon-based crew, captained by singer/guitarist Colin Meloy, made the journey into major waters with their quirky, days-of-old sound firmly intact, as revealed on the wistful acoustic "The Crane Wife 3" and the more upbeat "O Valencia!" which stands out as one of the Decemberists' catchiest songs. The group also indulges in the more dramatic, narrative aspect of its aesthetic on two extended tracks that each pass the ...
| | Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD (1975) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
Decemberists - A Practical Handbook film
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's "Rocky Raccoon." What Second Chapter immediately sets forth is the importance of Kirwan as a pop artist, and how, despite Fleetwood Mac's success after he left, his sounds could still have been beneficial to that supergroup. "Hot Summers Day" is a fine example of that, a beautiful song that could offset Buckingham's gritty ramblings. It would have made a nice counterpoint as Stevie Nicks complemented Christine McVie's tunes with her adventures, bringing an important change of pace to that popular band's hits. The jacket looks like a ...
