| | Asia Different Worlds: Live CD - Import Asia Discography of CDs
A repacking of two individual releases from 1999 and 2000, the two discs included on Different Worlds feature two distinct group lineups from crucial points in their second regeneration. After their studio reunion in 1992 for the Aqua album, the group went on a successful world tour that culminated in the recording of their performance at London's Town and Country Club. Mainly featuring new cuts from Aqua and minor hits, this disc will largely appeal to die-hard fans only. However, the second disc is a gem in the Asia catalog. The live acoustic performance features Asia's finest moments stripped down from their heavy, bombastic arena rock sound. Steve Howe is nowhere present on this particular performance, but Aziz Ibrahim most definitely picks up the slack and is in fine form throughout. While definitely not for the casual listener just getting into Asia's massive catalog, this set is definitely a nice piece to add to a collection for the die-hard fans. Also included is a bonus interview DVD featuring an in-depth conversation with Geoff Downes and John Payne. ~ Rob Theakston

The notes for this CD ask, "What issue is more topical than the Brazilian rain forest? So what reissue would be more topical than Walter Wanderley's Rain Forest?" Politically, this may be true, but musically, this collection is anything but topical. From the first tune -- the monster hit "Summer Samba," the listener is catapulted straight back to the '60s when bossa nova was new in the U.S. and everyone wanted a piece of it. Organist Wanderley made a big splash with this CD, which went platinum in two years -- and it does evoke strong water images, like "poolside" ...

| | Matt Sharp Puckett's Versus The Country Boy CD (2003) Extended Play
Different Worlds: Live MP3 Album
$7.45 After a brief run with the Rentals in the mid-'90s, ex-Weezer wunderkind Matt Sharp turned around his signature quirky pop for an Americana mix of acoustic guitars and moody, sunless melodies for a solo career. Sharp joined guitarist/keyboardist Greg Brown, formerly of Cake, and Josh Hager in early 2002 for what would become the charming Puckett's Versus the Country Boy EP. Sharp wears his heart on his sleeve on this easy-breathing four-song set. It seems like he is honest as a songwriter for the first time, sharing a sincere side for what's probably his most smartest material to date. It's nice to see Sharp create something that's tangible for him as an artist, and Weezer completists should be pleased with his musical progression. It was bound to happen and thankfully happened sooner rather than later. Through all of his experimenting, Sharp's talent has earned him great respect, but he's been a little unsure of what to do with that. With Puckett's Versus the Country Boy, he finally realizes that he deserves it. His confidence blossoms on the forlorn journey "Goodbye West Coast" and his tender heart swoons for "Visions of Anna." Tossing aside the Moog synthesizers for a grainy, high-lonesome romance on Puckett's Versus the Country Boy is a brilliant move for Sharp. ~ MacKenzie Wilson
After a four year absence, Matt Sharp returns to the music world as a solo artist, emerging with a sparse, acoustic four song EP titled, Puckett's Versus The Country Boy. Hidden away in a small house deep in the countryside of Leipers Fork, TN Matt removed himself to do some thinking, writing and recording for what has evolved into the EP and soon to follow debut solo album. The sound of his solo work is a big departure from what he is most well known for. The enigmatic front man for The Rentals (Maverick Records) released the seminal lo-fi new wave album Return of The Rentals in 1995, which featured the modern rock radio smash, "Friends Of P." and the critically acclaimed cult-classic Seven More Minutes. The sophomore effort was a glamorous affair of epic ballads and hedonistic celebrations, written and recorded in Barcelona ...
