| | U2 No Line On The Horizon CD (2009)
Realization songs
$10.49 There's no shortage of legendary producers in line to work with music world titans U2; when work with Rick Rubin broke off, Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois stepped in. The resulting NO LINE ON THE HORIZON, 2009's offering from the Irish rockers, continues in the grand U2 tradition, as soaring pop anthems like opening single "Get on Your Boots" pair with experimental melanges like "Tripoli," on a striking album featuring touches of all the albums come before, yet hinting at new worlds for Bono to conquer.
After spending the 1990s experimenting with electronic music and returning to arena-ready rock during the first few years of the 21st century, U2 stakes out territory somewhere between those two points on 2009's NO LINE ON THE HORIZON. Enlisting its go-to production trio of Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, and Steve Lillywhite, the Irish quartet seems intent on crafting a quirkier companion piece to HOW TO DISMANTLE AN ATOMIC BOMB, and they succeed with restless tracks such as "Get on Your Boots," which sounds like "Vertigo" hijacked by T. Rex, and "Stand Up Comedy," a wiry number that lets the Edge cut loose with barbed guitar lines. Some of most striking songs on HORIZON are the ones that venture farthest from U2's comfort zone, as on the surprisingly weighty title track, a tune that counterbalances its nearly industrial heft with a high-pitched keyboard melody, and, of course, Bono's soaring vocals. Although HORIZON ...

$14.04 | | Tyrone Davis Turn Back The Hands Of Time CD (1970) Remastered
Realization CD music
$9.39 If the only great song on Tyrone Davis' second album, Turn Back the Hands of Time, was its impeccable title track, it still would have been a noteworthy record in the history of uptown Chicago soul and early-'70s soul -- it's simply that good of a song. Fortunately, it's the tip of the iceberg on this terrific album that ranks among the finest soul records of its era. In a way, the single is a little misleading, since it is such a silky smooth, seductive tune that it gives the impression that everything on the album will be the same, and it's not. Yes, the album has more than its fair share of strings, backing vocals, horns, and even harpsichords (showcased on "If It's Love You're After"), but that doesn't mean this is so smooth that it becomes glossy and slick. Instead, it's luxurious, and Davis is able to deepen it with his nuanced, soulful interpretations; he's even given a chance to try bluesy funk with "Undying Love" and does a great slow ballad with "I Keep Coming Back." What's impressive about the record is not just that Davis is able to handle everything from those slow-burners to the soul-pop, sounding convincing in each setting, but that producer Willie Henderson has crafted utterly appropriate, intoxicating, and unique productions for each song. And those songs are all very, very strong. There's no filler here, just terrific songwriting from the pens of Jack Daniels/Johnny Moore, Eugene Record/Carl Davis, and Cash McCall, among others. There were other singles pulled from Turn Back the Hands of Time that scaled the charts -- "Is It Something You've Got?" and "I'll Be Right Here," both R&B Top Ten hits, plus "Let Me Back In" -- but album tracks like "All the Waiting Is Not in Vain," the Impressions-styled "Just Because of You," and the great, great, funky "Love Bones" are strong as well. There's not a weak moment here (and there ...
| | Modern Folk Quartet CD (1963)
Realization music CDs
$11.09 On the Modern Folk Quartet's eponymous debut, Cyrus Faryar (guitar, vocals), Henry "Tad" Diltz (banjo, vocals), Chip Douglas (bass, banjo, guitar, ukulele, bells, vocals), and Jerry Yester (guitar, vocal, cymbals) present a fresh youthful visage to a superbly chosen selection of concurrently new traditionals and original adaptations of standards from the folk music canon -- such as the one that kick-starts the affair. Derived from the spiritual "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," "Swing Down Chariot" is a brisk modernization benefiting from the instrumentalists' considerable prowess, bearing a similarity to other burgeoning folk combos like the Journeymen and the Kingston Trio. "Sassafras" is a blithe and frolicking ballad with a quirky and interminably catchy syncopated melody displaying their four-part blend perfectly. This is contrasted by Faryar and Yester's revision of the lovely and reserved "Brandy." The tune is haunting with a slight and poignant Baroque quality that provides a further outlet for the singers' intricate harmonies. Legendary jazz reedman Anthony Ortega supplied the high-flyin' and energetic "Wanderin' Willie," presenting ...
