An unusual project for Stockhausen-influenced composer Anthony Braxton, CHARLIE PARKER PROJECT 1993 consists of two discs--one live, one studio--of Charlie Parker compositions, plus two other bebop classics, Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia" and Miles Davis' "Sippin' at Bells." Braxton re-interprets these pieces after his own style, often radically reconstructing the familiar melodies into startlingly new and fascinating shapes.
Interestingly, the live and studio discs consist largely of the same material, giving the listener the opportunity to see how Braxton shapes his group's performances to ... | | Kate Linne Where I Fell CD (2008)
Charlie Parker Project 1993 CD music
$11.39 Kate Linne is an artist who has never been afraid to stand on both sides of the fence. Her debut EP walks the line between guitar-heavy pop and piano-driven blues, colored with an aggressive indie-rock tinge that integrates the record into a fresh and infectious whole. The subject matter of the EP is diverse!Kate alternates between musing about the trials of appearing composed in the face of hardship ("The Pretty Girl"), pleading for conflict resolution in relationships ("Where I Fell"), and chronicling the excitement of new love ("Sidewalks"). The lyrics are insightful and literary, yet she maintains an accessible honesty that is universally appealing. Her addictive hooks and gutsy vocal delivery shine on fast-paced numbers such as "Sidewalks" and "Where I Fell," betraying an adolescent love of female-fronted bands such as No Doubt and Garbage. Her ballads are pensive and sincere, with a soulful vocal style that subtly echos one of her favorite artists, Fiona Apple. She's not shy about citing Fiona as an influence, saying, "She was the reason that I took up the piano again after quitting my lessons in third grade. Tidal came out when I was in middle school, and it was the only record I would listen to. My parents bought me the sheet music, and I went through and painstakingly learned every song!I had to re-learn to read music to even get started." When asked about her career goals, Kate also plans to walk the line between the creative world and the business world. "Making music is my first love!it always has been. But, one day, I would like to be able to help other people do what I'm trying to do right now---make songwriting and performing a career." Producing records for other acts and starting a publishing company are both on her eventual to-do list, but at present she is entirely focused on her own musical ventures. "It was a huge step for me to even admit to myself that I couldn't let go of my dream of becoming a performer and songwriter. ...
