After doing the unthinkable (selling out!) on their commercially minded -- and only -- major-label release March or Die, underground heroes Motörhead thankfully returned to a more familiar sonic formula (extremely loud and fast) on the excellent Bastards. Gloriously distorted thrashers such as "On Your Feet or on Your Knees" and "Death or Glory" set the pace, and "Born to Raise Hell" is undoubtedly one of the band's greatest latter-day classics. As usual, major departures such as the acoustic-driven and socially conscious "Don't Let Daddy Kiss Me" stick out like a sore thumb, but the more balanced "Lost in the Ozone" (some acoustic, but also lots of noise) is a pleasant surprise. Though it is often overlooked, this album remains one of the band's strongest releases in the '90s. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

| | We Are Motorhead CD (2000)
Bastards songs
$10.15 On hearing the first few measures of "See Me Burning" on Motorhead's latest WE ARE MOTORHEAD, it's easy to see how bands such as Metallica and Slayer can trace their roots back to the second wave of British metal. The image of vocalist/bassist Lemmy Kilmister craning his neck skyward to reach his microphone is one that every hard rock fan or casual observer knows well. Much like AC/DC, Motorhead has never tried to change its sound to adapt to musical trends; the album's title almost suggests a restatement of direction for the band that played an integral part in the birth of speed and thrash metal.
"Slow Dance" will undoubtedly join the ranks of danceable ...
| | Motorhead Hammered CD (2002)
Bastards album
$9.99 Unlike many of the band's contemporaries, Motörhead manages to still release lean and mean rock records, while keeping the songs simple rather than adding some electronic accompaniment or trying to be current or hip. Many of the other bands from Motörhead's era might still be worth checking out live (Iron Maiden, AC/DC), but each of those groups' new albums is almost always more forgettable than the last. In Hammered's "Walk a Crooked Mile," Motörhead has written at least one more classic to add to the band's ...

$12.59 It's been said that the only things certain in life are death and taxes. One can safely add Motorhead to that adage. The famed trio led by the iconic Lemmy Kilmister released its 23rd album with 2006's KISS OF DEATH. Giving the people what they want straight and true, Motorhead unleash ...
| | Agoraphobic Nosebleed Poacher Diaries CD (1999)
Bastards music CDs
$12.89 "The Poached Diaries" finds Converge pushing their quirky, black version of screamy hardcore even further than before, with layered textures, throat-splitting emissions, and good old-fashioned metal riffs out the ass. Agoraphoric Nosebleed, as the name might suggest, offer an even more peculiar and cut-throat version of hardcore, complete with drum machine and off-the-wall samples. The mesh of these two bands results in one of the better and more interesting hardcore albums to see the light of day in the late '90s. ~ Blake Butler

| | Dennis Bergstrom Road To Conejo CD (2005)
Bastards music CDs
$17.69 Growing up in San Diego, a city with a thirst for jazz, brought Dennis Bergstrom close to players like Ottmar Liebert and Jessy Cook. He would hear them on the radio and see them at Humphrey's Concerts Series on Shelter Island in the summer months. These guitarists brought Flamenco World beat to him and lit his world on fire. Dennis had always been attracted to Latin music and when he heard Ottmar's first release, "Neuveau Flamenco" on Higher Octave Music, he decided to seek out formal training. He enrolled at Musician's Institute in Hollywood in 1996 and began to learn as much from the students as the teachers. "There were students from all over the world playing all different styles, willing to teach others while absorbing material themselves," says Dennis. As he began to get a bit of Spanish and flamenco sounds under his hands, it made his surf trips into Mexico ...

| | 36 Crazyfists Rest Inside The Flames CD (2006) (Import)
Bastards album
$17.15 The third album by Oregon (by way of Anchorage, Alaska) post-hardcore outfit 36 Crazy Fists expands on the somewhat schematic metalcore-by-numbers sound of their earlier albums. Expanding the vocal palette by including a larger number of clean vocals in counterpoint to lead singer Brock Lindow's Cookie Monsterisms and considerably increasing the melodic content of the songs sound at first like they might be sops to a wider audience. However, listening to Rest Inside the Flames in the context of the band's two earlier albums, it seems more likely that this widescreen take on post-hardcore is less a sellout move than the work of a band attempting to move out of a stylistic rut. This, of course, is an admirable goal, and for the ...
