Starring Edward Dmytryk NTSC RC-0 In RAINTREE COUNTY, a bratty southern belle takes out her disappointment in marriage on her overly sensitive and equally disappointed husband.
Ideological midwestern lad John Shawnessy (Montgomery Clift) lets intriguing southern belle Susanna (Elizabeth Taylor) lure him from Raintree County and his angelic hometown sweetheart (Eva Marie Saint). Wed against the advice of the locals, the pair head South and spend the next few years making each other royally miserable. As it turns out, Susanna is more than slightly neurotic as the result of some buried family secrets, and as for John...oh, why? Why did he ever leave Raintree County? Later, the Civil War breaks out, and the turmoil and troubles get even more woeful.
The film is a lengthy, stately affair, filled with lots of green meadows and fine performances, which usually transcend the stilted dialogue. Lee Marvin is excellent as a hard-drinking braggart, and Saint is even more radiant than Taylor. Unfortunately, Clift suffered a near-fatal car accident during filming, which left his face scarred and partially paralyzed. Many of his scenes in this film naturally suffer as a result of this tragedy. Hoping it would be another GONE WITH THE WIND, the producers lined up Edward Dmytryk to direct from the Ross Lockridge novel, while Johnny Green composed the excellent music, with Nat King Cole singing the title track.
Theatrical release: December 20, 1957.
Filmed in Danville and McCracken County, Kentucky.
Raintree County Reviews: "...[The film] still conjures up affection from moviegoers who were around in '57….[With] pristine 65mm photography and Johnny Green's classic score..."

$10.05 This World War II comedy stars Cary Grant in an uncharacteristic turn as Walter Eckland. Walter is an unshaven bum who inhabits a deserted island in the South Seas. Completely boozed up, unshaven, and badly dressed, Walter is a watcher for Japanese spy planes. An Australian Navy Commander, Frank Houghton (Trevor Howard) has pressed Walter, who once had his own cruiser at the beginning of the war, to become the sole occupant of a strategic watching station. It is into this world that smart and sexy Catherine Frenau (Leslie Caron) is drawn when Walter, en route in a dinghy to rescue another watcher, stumbles on to the schoolteacher and a flock of seven young girls. The girls have been marooned because their pilot was ordered to leave them to rescue the survivors of an abandoned bomber. Ralph Nelson directs shrewdly and keeps the comedy crisp as these eight survivors try to inhabit the same small island without driving each other crazy. The sharp witted Academy Award winning screenplay by Peter Stone and Frank Tarloff, is based on a story by S.H. Barnett.

Raintree County review
$9.69 Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard's comic timing is excellent, and the works on which they are teamed together contain some of the funniest moments filmed by either actor. Hope plays Larry Lawrence, a New York City detective who becomes involved in a gangster-related hotel shoot-out. Believing he has killed a man, Lawrence hides in a trunk owned by Mary Carter (Goddard). When Lawrence gets out of the trunk, he finds himself on a steamboat, as Carter is en route to a castle which she has recently inherited on a small island off the coast of Cuba. While aboard the ship, Carter and Lawrence are aprised of rumors that the castle is haunted, but they remains steadfast in their will to visit it. Once there, many perilous and hilarious adventures await. THE GHOST BREAKERS is widely heralded as the best of Hope and Goddard's combined efforts.

$9.29 The boozing, smoking, cussing captain of a tramp steamer, Charlie Allnut, saves prim and proper Rose Sayer after her brother is killed by German soldiers at the beginning of World War I in Africa. Many quarrels later, the two set sail on the Ulonga-Bora in order to sabotage a German ship. Based on the 1935 novel by C.S. Forester, the wonderful combination of Hepburn and Bogie (who won an Oscar) makes this a thoroughly enjoyable blend of comedy and adventure. Later came the book (and Clint Eastwood film) White Hunter, Black Heart, which chronicled Peter Viertel's experiences observing Huston throughout the making of the picture.

$8.85 Director Bruce Beresford's affinity for the subtleties of southern life is apparent in this adaptation of Alfred Uhry's Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Starring Jessica Tandy as Daisy Werthan and Morgan Freeman as Hoke Colburn, the film opens in late-1940s Atlanta. Since Miss Daisy is becoming a menace behind the wheel, her son, Boolie (Dan Aykroyd), ignores her protests and hires Hoke, a black chauffeur. When the feisty matron decides to resist necessity and walk to the store, the equally stubborn chauffeur follows her in her car. As he says to Boolie, "I used to rassle hogs down to the ground...ain't nary a hog got away from me yet." But Hoke's methods are gentleness and patience, and as the years elapse in his ongoing tug-of-war with the temperamental Daisy, she begins to tacitly acknowledge his wisdom. When she expresses annoyance over the demands of the nascent civil rights movement, Hoke points out to the Jewish woman the similarity between the attack on her synagogue and Klan attacks on black churches. But it is only after many years together that they can finally admit to the depth of the friendship they have shared. The two stars give unforgettable performances, and Beresford's direction is a model of restraint.

| | Martin Kane Private Eye - Vol. 1 DVD (1951)
Raintree County movie DVD
$7.89 The world's first television private detective, MARTIN KANE PRIVATE EYE gradually became a big hit as America tuned in to watch the affable yet street-smart detective take on the crooks of New York City. The show ran for five seasons with several different actors playing the role of Kane. Each manifestation of the gumshoe had a different style and attitude, but all, invariably, spent a lot of time in Happy McMann's Tobacco Shop (the show was sponsored by U.S. Tobacco). Like much of early television, the sets, props, plots, and extras left much to be desired, but Kane's wise-cracking mix of cynicism and sentimentality, and the juicy nature of the crimes, kept people coming back for more. Volume one features four vintage Kane cases: Kane finds the clues to man's murder in his will, a burlesque dancer is strangled at a flophouse operated by a disreputable psychic, a killer on trial murders the prosecuter in the courtroom, and Kane find the mutilated body of a solicitor in a trunk owned by three reclusive sisters.
