The material on Skid Row is mostly typical pop-metal fluff, but since Skid Row was one of the hardest bands to find commercial success during the hair metal fad, the songs sound angrier and more aggressive than the lyrics and hooks might indicate. Part of this is due simply to the musical talent in the band, and part of it is due to vocalist Sebastian Bach; his tendency to oversing actually gives some much-needed nasty attitude to most of the songs, and when the music does match those sentiments (i.e., "Youth Gone Wild"), the results fulfill, rather than merely hint at, Skid Row's potential. But the melodies and songwriting are pretty consistent throughout the album, even if they aren't as close to true heavy metal as they sound. The hit power ballads "18 and Life" and "I Remember You" are musically generic, but Bach's over the top delivery makes them guilty pleasures as well. ~ Steve Huey

Q (5/95, p.132) - 3 Stars - Good - "...this debut still stands as a bracing fusion of street smart riffage, riddled with commercial hooks....Not quite a classic but certainly a notable debut." Mojo (Publisher) (11/00, p.116) - "...Their sound coalesced around Moore's burn-up blues guitaring....Cream, Allman Brothers and Hendrix are obvious influences....[they] had a spare intensity all their own..." Skid Row album
$16.29 The Quill is a Swedish hard rock/metal act that combines the best of classic hard rock with alternative and metal. The group's influences come from across the spectrum, but some show up more obviously than others. First, it is easy to spot Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. Give a listen to "Sell No Soul" for a quick example of those. They also chart into Led Zeppelin territory. Check out "(Wade Across) The Mighty River" and think Led Zeppelin III. All their influences are not so old-school, though. Indeed, tracks like "Until Earth Is Bitter Gone" showcase a Soundgarden sort of texture and "Overlord" screams Corrosion of Conformity. The group is being billed as "stoner rock," and it does exhibit healthy doses of that variant of the jam band sound, but that is certainly not the whole picture. The Hammond B-3 organ lends a great retro texture to this release, but much of the power and magic of the group comes from the incredible vocal talents of Magnus Ekvall, who really pulls it all together with style. It is not often that a band of this genre is elevated to greatness by the singing (Judas Priest comes to mind), but that is definitely the case with this one. The album shows a versatility and mastery of both songwriting and arranging that are not present in much hard rock these days. Let's hope these guys stay true and rocking for a long time, because they may become the hard rock legends of this era on which future bands are based. ~ Gary Hill

| | Quill In Triumph CD (2006) Import
Skid Row CD music
$16.29 Remember in the late '80s, when Led Zeppelin clones were at a premium (Kingdom Come, Bonham, etc.)? Well, although the Quill isn't as instantly smirk-inducing as some of the aforementioned bands, they definitely have studied their Zeppelin and other '70s-era classic rock records, as evidenced by their 2006 release In Triumph. After all, singer Magnus Ekwall certainly has Robert Plant's "cat in heat" vocals down pat, while guitarist Christian Carlsson has obviously studied Jimmy Page's guitar grandeur. Case in point, "Broken Man" sounds like it's straight off of Whitesnake's Slide It In, while the album-opening "Keep the Circle Whole" would have fit snuggly on the self-titled debut by Badlands. For fans of bands influenced by the mighty Zep, the Quill's fifth full-length release definitely aims to please. But you get the feeling that if In Triumph was released, say, in 1988 or 1989, the group would have challenged the likes of Great White for valuable MTV and radio space. In 2006, however, the album comes off as a bit of an anachronism. ~ Greg Prato
yes, it's a bold statement, but one that swedish four-piece the quill is not afraid of making. based out of the coastal town of m”nster†s those guys have payed their dues and then some. the core members - vocalist magnus ekwall, guitarist christian carlsson and drummer jolle atlagic - have been playing together since the early nineties. the band eventually became the quill and in 1995 released its self-titled ...
| | Moody Blues Seventh Sojourn CD (1972) England; SACD Hybrid
Skid Row music CDs
$22.79 This is a DTS CD, which features DTS 5.1 Surround Sound technology and is playable on a DTS-capable 5.1 Surround Sound system.
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
While the Moodies were never exactly a rocker's delight, SEVENTH SOJOURN, the seventh recording with the post-Denny Laine lineup, is perhaps their most ballad-heavy album. Ironically, the album's biggest hit, which would become one of the group's signature songs, was the uncharacteristically uptempo "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band." Elsewhere, appearances are equally deceiving; interpersonal tensions had developed in the band to the point where there wouldn't be another Moody Blues album for six years, but the album is full of slow, romantic musings, not signs of strife.
As usual, it's Justin Hayward, he of the silky voice and heart-on-a-sleeve lyricism, who excels at all this romantic balladry, his contributions being the most melodic and affecting. John Lodge's aforementioned "I'm Just a Singer" is far and away the most energetic tune, but it closes the album and doesn't disturb the contemplative mood. Ironically, though the band was coming apart, they were also reaching new heights. Keyboardist Mike Pinder had traded in his Mellotron for its more sophisticated cousin, the Chamberlain, which provided an improved ...

$14.05 This 1984 album by Pat Travers, issued for the first time on CD in 2008, presents a typically hard-rocking set of songs by the Canadian singer/guitarist. Featuring the driving single "Killer," HOT SPOT marked the end of Travers's `80s heyday, and stands out as his last studio ...

| | Gary Moore Bad For You Baby CD (2008)
Skid Row CD music
$11.19 Another year, another Gary Moore blues-rock album nearly interchangeable with the last. That's no problem for fans or even newcomers, because despite the surface similarities between releases, Moore never seems to be going through the motions for the sake of further bulking up his already substantial catalog. His tough guitar lines remain biting yet classy, and his underappreciated voice is strong and convincing on originals and covers that nail all of the blues-rock bases without sounding rote. While there are no surprises here, Bad for You Baby is far from a disappointment. Moore continues a string of rugged, post-hard rock, power blues that he has carved his niche in since 1990's Still Got the Blues. He applies his throaty vocals and feral guitar to a pair of Muddy Waters tunes to impressive effect. No one will mistake his versions of Waters' "Walking Through the Park" or "Someday Baby" for the classic Chess era nuggets they are. Yet Moore's rocked up attack hits the mark for being relatively faithful to their melodies even as he wields his power blues sledgehammer. Moore boogies through J.B. Lenoir's "Mojo Boogie" like he invented the style, and even if his husky vocals will never be mistaken for Lenoir's reedy, high pitched singing, he tears into the tune with enough energy to shake up anything in the Johnny Winter songbook. Guitar shredders will thrill to the hot fret acrobatics of the double-time "Down the Line," and those who thought Led Zeppelin's first ...
| | Queens Of The Stone Age R CD (2000) Limited Edition
Skid Row music CDs
$10.59 U.K. exclusive contains the bonus disc "Feel Good Hit Of The Summer" EP.
Josh Homme's creation Queens Of The Stone Age, although they remain close to their rock roots, are a complex amalgam of atmosphere and textures. RATED R is a retro-sounding album, recorded on two 16-track machines by producer Chris Goss (Masters Of Reality) and GRAMMY award winning engineer Trinia Shoemaker.
The band's name pokes fun at the homophobic rednecks that Homme says used to attend Kyuss (his former band) shows. Some of the album's highlights are "The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret," "Feel Good Hit of the Summer" and "Better Living Through Chemistry." Former Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan has some sublime moments on a few tracks, including "In the Fade." RATED R is a unique, eclectic ...

| | Overkill Relixiv CD (2005)
Skid Row album
$12.95 The phrase 'You either love 'em or you hate 'em' could be used to describe several rock bands, but it seems custom-made for thrash veterans Overkill. Few bands throughout the history of heavy metal have thrashed as intensely or possessed a singer like Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth (whose vocals give 'piercing' a whole new meaning). But the band (or more succinctly, mainstays Ellsworth and bassist D.D. Verni) admirably stuck to their guns through it all. Whereas many metal veterans could be spotted donning flannel shirts in the early '90s or trying out their rap skills around the turn of the century, Overkill has turned a blind eye to trends. And while they never infiltrated the mainstream like Anthrax or Megadeth, their perseverance has paid off, as they retain a strong following to this day, and continue to crank out albums, such as 2005's Relixiv. That said, each new Overkill release is not unlike each new AC/DC release -- you know exactly what you're going to get. Variety may be at a minimum here, but by now, it's clear that that's how Overkill and their fans like it, as evidenced by such dense n' intense tracks as "Within Your Eyes," the Spinal Tap-like ...

Skid Row album
$13.19 Throughout the course of his solo career, guitarist Michael Schenker has enlisted the aid of countless singers. Unfortunately, few remained on board for more than a handful of releases -- undoubtedly one of the main reasons why Schenker's solo albums never matched the commercial/artistic success of his UFO days. Perhaps finally sensing that he'll never settle on a single vocalist, Schenker's 2006 solo outing, Tales of Rock N Roll features several singers who the guitarist has shared the studio and stage with in the past -- Graham Bonnet, Robin ...
