(1 Customer Review)
Though she has been best known as a superlative interpreter of pop songs, the singer Dionne Warwick began her musical career singing with her family's gospel group, the Drinkard Singers. She returns to her roots on this 1968 set, on which the Drinkards (among whose number features a young Cissy Houston) back her on a variety of gospel classics, including "Old Landmark," "Blessed Be the Name of the Lord," and "Steal Away."
Liner Note Authors: Fred Kirby; Richie Unterberger.
Personnel: Dionne Warwick (vocals); Dionne Warwick.

Magic Of Believing album
$11.09 After leaving Scepter, Dionne Warwick floundered for a while as she sought the production and arranging assistance she needed to return to her past heights. She didn't get it on this 1975 release, as songs like "Love Me One More Time" and "Jealousy" were tentatively sung, burdened with unimpressive lyrics, or poorly produced. Warwick was also experiencing personal problems and experimenting with adding an "e" to her last name, neither of which helped the situation. ~ Ron Wynn

| | Restless Heart Still Restless CD (2004)
Magic Of Believing CD music
$9.25 Still Restless is the first album of all new studio material in 14 years by Restless Heart. Little has changed since their self-titled debut album was released in 1985; their perfect harmonies and smooth country-rock arrangements remain intact. Basically, Restless Heart picked up where they left off in the mid-'90s, sticking with their strong points instead of radically changing their musical direction. Highlights include the mandolin-dominated "Feel My Way to You," the soft rock, melancholic ballad "Miracle," and a cover of the Beatles' "The Night Before," which sounds more like mid-'70s America than the Fab Four. ~ Al Campbell

| | Kathy Mattea Right Out Of Nowhere CD (2005)
Magic Of Believing music CDs
$12.75 Having long transcended her country music roots, Kathy Mattea explores further afield in this folk- and world music-flavored set. Mattea has made a career out of a single-minded pursuit of her own muse, and here, just for the heck of it, she includes a bluegrass-tinged Stones cover in "Gimme Shelter," as well as John Fogerty's "Down on the Corner," done to a swaying New Orleans shuffle, and the old gospel standard "Wade in the Water." With the rest of the album consisting of well-chosen songs by her contemporaries (and one original, the simply arranged, beautiful "Give it Away"), RIGHT OUT OF NOWHERE further consolidates Mattea's reputation as a talented and eclectic artist.

| | Baxter CD (1998)
Magic Of Believing music CDs
$9.29 The Swedish group Baxter is one of the small (but growing) number of bands who are successfully integrating the tense, hyperkinetic rattle and roar of drum'n'bass with pop song structures. And on the evidence of its self-titled debut, Baxter is doing it better than most. Baxter features minimalist but thoroughly attractive melodies that hover uneasily over dark, brooding drum loops and sketchy samples; it's sort of like a pop-techno-illbient fusion, only much more emotionally involving, what with Nina Ramsby's warm voice and lyrics like "I need a friend/I need you." That's pretty naked writing for this genre, and it contrasts nicely with the chilly electronic ...
| | S O D Speak English Or Die: The Platinum Edition CD (1985) Platinum Edt
Magic Of Believing songs
$11.19 S.O.D.'s Speak English or Die was an important record in the fusion of hardcore punk with thrash and speed metal, making even more explicit the connections that Anthrax's music implied. The tone of the music is crushingly loud, fast, and aggressive, but not at all serious -- the record is filled with goofy, macho humor, some of which ...

Magic Of Believing album

| | DJ Quik Trauma CD (2005) Edited
Magic Of Believing album
$9.99 DJ Quik is the essence of West Coast Hip-Hop, having been there from the early days when Compton was asserting itself as the voice of rap as the 1980s bled into the 1990s, and TRAUMA, the rapper/producer's seventh album and first in 3 years, finds Quik as relevant and potent in both lyrics and beats as when he dropped QUIK IS THE NAME. Never flashy, Quik finds art in simplicity, as with the laid-back groove of "Black Mercedes," and the rapid-fire spitting about relationships and distractions on "Catch 22."
If Henry Mancini had grown up composing music in Compton, it might have sounded something like the tracks on TRAUMA (INSTRUMENTALS). DJ Quik, a rapper/producer who began mining the West Coast hardcore/G-funk sound in 1991, is usually flanked ...
