Sometimes the most unexpected jewels can be crystallized in adversity -- this album was a case in point, the indirect result of the financial collapse of Enigma Records, to which Al Stewart had been signed, in 1990. In tandem with Peter White, Stewart went out on the road, and the resulting 11-song album was duly issued on EMI (which was still Stewart's label, outside of the United States). There actually wasn't any shortage of live Al Stewart material in the can, but RHYMES IN ROOMS allowed him to deliver fresh reinterpretations of his best-known songs, this time out all-acoustic and in a more intimate setting than his earlier live recordings -- with a full band -- had permitted. The results are pleasing and never repetitive, even for those who are extremely familiar with the original versions. Stewart's and White's extended intros and vamps on the most familiar fare here are delightful, and the intimacy and immediacy of the setting and recording allow Stewart to add some new inflections and directions to the vintage material, which goes back more than 20 years in his career.
Personnel includes: Al Stewart; Peter White (guitar).
Additional personnel: Peter White .

Live: Rhymes In Rooms CD music
$10.45 "Here In Angola," "Pandora," and "Indian Summer" were originally released on the LP INDIAN SUMMER.
24 CARROTS is folk-rocker Al Stewart's 1980 album, recorded with Shot in the Dark. This reissue features five bonus tracks, "Here in Angola", "Indian Summer", "Pandora", "Delia's Gone", and "Princess Olivia".
The pun of the title of 24 Carrots -- the first overt signal of humor Al Stewart has displayed in years, possibly ever -- illustrates that a lot has changed since 1978's Time Passages. The loosening of his wit is perhaps the most evident, but the most significant is the ...

| | Child In Me, Vol. 1 CD (2001)
Live: Rhymes In Rooms songs
$16.45 Jamie deRoy is a multi-talented individual having successfully worked as comedienne, TV talk show host, producer, actress, and cabaret singer. Now she has come up with the novel idea of selecting songs which celebrate childhood, hers and others', and inviting more than a dozen cabaret singers to join her in recording them. The title of her album is also the title of deRoy's weekly TV show broadcast in N.Y.C. The liner notes include a childhood picture of each performer as well as a vignette from that time of his/her life. Some tunes are better known than others. Portia Nelson's "Make a Rainbow" gained notoriety after it was performed at President Clinton's inauguration. Here it's sung by cabaret, stage, and TV performer Deborah Tranelli. Kathie Lee Gifford appears to sing the title tune. All of the material is simple, sweet, sunny, and sincere, befitting an album which is an accolade to that part of one's life that should be unaffected by cares and worries. The closest thing to a dark cloud is "Sailin' On," a track by Laurie Beechman, who played Grizabella in Cats for four years and who passed away in 1999. This album moves one to sit back and recall happy special childhood times. Since this set is subtitled Vol. 1, that presumes there's more to ...
| | Firefall Elan CD (1978)
Live: Rhymes In Rooms album
$9.79 Firefall crested with its third album, Elan, which was prefaced by "Strange Way," an unusually vituperative leadoff single from the group who had broken through with songs of romantic devotion like "You Are the Woman" and "Just Remember I Love You." This time, lead singer and songwriter Rick Roberts was unmoved by a weepy lover, calling her emotional outbursts, "a strange way to tell me you love me," and adding that, if she wanted to cry to somebody, ...
