The 18-minute title track, a chronicle of amorous exploits, attracted attention for including the word "fucking" (then taboo in pop songs) as well as alluding to impotence. The five shorter songs are uniformly excellent, from "In Brooklyn," the account of Al's first visit to New York, to the grim Soho tale "Old Compton Street Blues," and the wry "You Should Have Listened to Al." Particularly vivid are the lyrics of "Life and Life Only," which deal with personal relationships as observed by a child, who concludes "and I was feeling small, sitting on the wall / looking at them all and wondering who will I be?" This and other tracks are enhanced by some effective use of electric guitar, courtesy of Richard Thompson and Jimmy Page.
For his second album, Al Stewart forsook the orchestral arrangements of BEDSITTER IMAGES, teaming up with Fairport Convention and others for the rock-oriented LOVE CHRONICLES, which Melody Maker nominated as Folk LP of 1969.

24 CARROTS is folk-rocker Al Stewart's 1980 album, recorded with Shot in the Dark. This reissue features five bonus tracks, "Here in Angola", "Indian Summer", "Pandora", "Delia's Gone", and "Princess Olivia".
The pun of the title of 24 Carrots -- the first overt signal of humor Al Stewart has displayed in years, possibly ever -- illustrates that a lot has changed since 1978's Time Passages. The loosening of his wit is perhaps the most evident, but the most significant is the departure of producer Alan Parsons, who collaborated with Stewart on his mid-'70s triptych of masterpieces. In truth, 24 Carrots isn't far removed from those high points, because he is indeed still writing at a remarkably consistent pace. No, this record isn't quite at the high standard of the previous three albums, but it does have a number of brilliant moments, from the opening "Running Man" through the silly but effective "Mondo Sinistro" and the gorgeous "Midnight Rocks." On March 25, 1947, East Texas folksinger Sam Hinton recorded 54 American folk songs (many of them learned from Carl Sandburg's American Songbag), all in one take, onto four 16" aluminum transcription discs for the Library of Congress. This marathon session was then filed away for some 50 years until this release of 46 of the songs on a single CD (most of the songs come in at well under two minutes in length) by Germany's Bear Family Records in 1999. What's astounding about these tracks, aside from the sheer number of them, is the complete consistency in Hinton's unassuming but exactly right singing and guitar playing throughout the whole session. He isn't flashy on any of these and he doesn't force a particular philosophy or personality into the songs; he simply performs them with deceptive ease, one after another. The result is an unhurried, sometimes playful, and often elegant survey of American folk music channeled through a singer who really has no axe to grind, making this set all the more startlingly refreshing because of that stance. With his easy, flexible baritone, Hinton sounds a bit like Burl Ives, but the relaxed demeanor of his delivery belies the careful research he puts into the songs he sings, and he sings a lot of songs (he is rumored to know well over 5,000 of them), so these 46 are just the tip of the iceberg. One of the great lost classics of the psychedelic rock era, S.F. SORROW was recorded at the same time (and in the same studio with the same engineer) as SGT. PEPPER and PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN, and is on par with both. Unfortunately, the commercial fate of the album (and the group) wasn't as rosy as that of its peers, but that doesn't diminish S.F. SORROW'S quality or historical importance. The record marked an important turning point for the Pretty Things, who began as a Stones-ish R&B band, but by this time were ready to take the leap that a sudden personnel change made easier.
