Personnel includes: Al Stewart, Rick Wakeman, Brinsley Schwarz. Personnel: Al Stewart (acoustic guitar); Brinsley Schwarz (acoustic 12-string guitar); Tim Renwick (electric guitar); Cal Bachelor, Tim Walker (Spanish guitar); Rick Wakeman, Bob Andrews (organ); Brian Odgers, Bruce Thomas (bass guitar); Graham Hunt, John Wilson , Roger Pope (drums); John Donnelly, Mick Welton, Kevin Powers (background vocals). This is a transitional Al Stewart album. After stretching the boundaries of song length and language with Love Chronicles, he was in a something of a holding pattern on Orange, without any obviously profound inspiration or moments of daring. "Songs Out of Clay," however, does reveal the first signs of the mix of acoustic and electric guitar sounds that he would perfect on his next album, Past, Present and Future, two years later, while "The Fourth of May," a six-minute personal story-song, gets something of the beat and the sound that Stewart would refine in achieving his subsequent success -- he just needed subject matter other than busted relationships. Orange also introduced Tim Renwick, whose lead guitar would become central to the sound on Stewart's subsequent albums. His singing, however, is still of a rather mournful and even monotonous nature, except on those two songs; he hadn't yet found sufficient variety in his tone and delivery, and even the presence of Rick Wakeman's elegant, classically based, arpeggio-laden piano accompaniments couldn't rescue most of these songs. There's also a pretty cool cover of Bob Dylan's "I Don't Believe You," cut as a warm-up for the rest of the album. ~ Bruce Eder Al Stewart Orange Songs | 1. | You Don't Even Know Me | $0.99 | |

$10.45 Personnel: Al Stewart (guitar). Bedsitter Images unveiled a promising but tentative folk-rock singer/songwriter. Al Stewart's songs already displayed his talent for observational storytelling, though at this point he was detailing ordinary lives of British people and autobiographical romance, rather than epic historical incidents. Most of the cuts used a full orchestra, and although the folk-baroque approach worked for some folk-rock artists of the era like Judy Collins, here it seemed ill-conceived. The orchestration was twee, ...

The Delgados includes: Emma Pollack, Alun Woodward (vocals); Stewart Henderson (bass); Paul Savage (drums). Entertainment Weekly (4/25/97, p.71) - "...while they're not the first of the bunch to take their cues from post-punk American noise-meisters like Pavement and Sonic Youth, their achievement is a wily meshing of mood and melody that sidesteps indie torpor." - Rating: A- Magnet (7-8/97, pp.64-65) - "...[Delgados] blend their own imaginations with diverse influences in a way that makes them well worth noticing." Domestiques is the sound of the Delgados developing their songcraft. Everything is a bit more loose and jagged than on Peloton and The Great Eastern. Perhaps they hadn't yet mastered their instruments, or they were torn between the pop and punk aesthetics they would later straddle so masterfully. For the most part, the melodies and hooks aren't as strong as later material; maybe the album is missing a certain bittersweet quality. Sonically, things are about on par with the later albums, but there's less harmonizing and less interplay between the two lead vocalists. The songs here are also a bit noisier ...

$12.89 Mecca Normal: Jean Smith (various instruments); David Lester (guitar). Personnel: Jean Smith (vocals, guitar, saxophone, piano, keyboards, synthesizer, percussion); David Lester (guitar). Recording information: The Hive, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Photographer: Thomas Boettner. In the 1980s and early '90s it was almost impossible to get away from lo-fi, indie troubadours committed to a minimalist, D.I.Y.-noise approach, and by the early 2000s, an age saturated with overproduced "alternative" bands, that style came off sounding as vital as ever. Of course, Mecca Normal, a duo comprising vocalist Jean Smith and guitarist David Lester, ...
| | Janet Bates Another Child CD (2006)

$13.29 The political nature of this cd, I think, reflects the extremely tumultuous time our world is going through. The songs are an attempt to replace apathy with empathy. There is an old native American proverb “Oh, Great Spirit, grant that I may not criticize my neighbor until I have walked a mile in his moccasins”I only now realize that, that is what I do when I write songs, I often see a picture or read about someone and then try to imagine what it must feel like to be them. I have tried to imagine what it must have been like to have been ...
