Swing jazz influences dominate..." | | Al Stewart Orange CD (1972) Bonus Tracks
Between The Wars album
$10.19 This is a transitional Al Stewart album. After stretching the boundaries of song length and language with Love Chronicles, he was in a something of a holding pattern on Orange, without any obviously profound inspiration or moments of daring. "Songs Out of Clay," however, does reveal the first signs of the mix of acoustic and electric guitar sounds that he would perfect on his next album, Past, Present and Future, two years later, while "The ...
| | Al Stewart 24 Carrots CD (1980) Bonus Tracks
Between The Wars CD music
$10.45 "Here In Angola," "Pandora," and "Indian Summer" were originally released on the LP INDIAN SUMMER.
24 CARROTS is folk-rocker Al Stewart's 1980 album, recorded with Shot in the Dark. This reissue features five bonus tracks, "Here in Angola", "Indian Summer", "Pandora", "Delia's Gone", and "Princess Olivia".
The pun of the title of 24 Carrots -- the first overt signal of humor Al Stewart has displayed in years, possibly ever -- illustrates that a lot has changed since 1978's Time Passages. The loosening of his wit is perhaps the most evident, but the most significant is the departure of producer Alan Parsons, who collaborated with Stewart on his mid-'70s triptych of masterpieces. In truth, 24 Carrots isn't far removed from those high points, because ...
| | Gerry Mulligan Meets Ben Webster CD (1959)
Between The Wars music CDs
$8.09 The last 5 tracks are previously unreleased songs from the original sessions.
This album combines the talents of two jazz giants. Saxophonist Ben Webster was one of the instrument's most influential exponents, primarily through his work with Duke Ellington. Mulligan, meanwhile, was an integral part of the 50s west coast movement and this set represents the confluence of two different generations. The featured quintet includes drummer Mel Lewis and bassist Leroy Vinnegar (who later played on the Doors' The Soft Parade), but the six tracks are noteworthy for the splendid empathy struck by Mulligan (baritone) and Webster (tenor). One of several collaborations between the former and notable guest artists, Gerry Mulligan Meets Ben Webster is a fine example of how two seemingly disparate musicians can perform together superbly.
Although baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan was briefly typecast as an "heretical modernist" by ...

| | Ronan Keating 10 Years Of Hits CD (2004)
Between The Wars CD music
$12.79 This compilation explores a decade of hits and album tracks from UK singer Ronan Keating, including songs he recorded as part of boy band Boyzone. As a bonus, the collection includes Keating's solo reworking of three Boyzone hits.
10 Years of Hits boasts quite a title; at the time of its release, Ronan Keating had only been a solo artist for four years, and not one of his hits from the six previous years as lead singer for Boyzone is featured in its original form. The three Boyzone hits, re-recorded for this collection, were all previous hits for other artists -- "Baby Can I Hold You" by Tracy Chapman, "Words" by the Bee Gees, and "Father & Son" by Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens). If it is a misleading title, it is also a forgivable one, because 13 U.K. Top Ten hits are included in the collection, as well as duets with Yusuf Islam, LeAnn Rimes, and Lulu, and Bryan Adams's "The Way You Make Me Feel," on which he sings background vocals. It is a comprehensive collection of Keating's material up to 2004, and if one doesn't find anything of interest on it, one will probably not find much of interest on the individual albums, because he has a very set sense of style, and seldom strays from it. The other artists mentioned are an indication of that style, which reflect his love for country, pop, folk, ballads, and light -- very light -- rock. Signature Keating ballads include the U.K. ...
