LAST OF THE BREED partners Willie Nelson with two other legends of maverick country, Merle Haggard and Ray Price. With a collection of talent this archetypal, the title sounds less like a boast and more like a statement of fact. Price is an old-school country gentlemen hip enough to hang with the Outlaws, while Haggard and Nelson are probably the only pot-smoking hippies universally accepted by the red states.
LAST OF THE BREED is an easy-on-the-ears honky-tonk shuffle of a record. The trio ambles through many of the classics that made them famous and, surprisingly, the weather of age suits them well--particularly Price, always the best singer of the bunch, whose robust tenor has lost a step or two over the years. The lack of power gives frail yet touching readings to, among others, his own "Heartaches By The Number," and Hank Williams's classic "Lost Highway." The latter song features the angelic Jordanaires, and is probably the least ravaged and thereby most tragic version of this oft-covered song. The listener is led to think: If these guys can get lost, then we're all in trouble. Not to be outdone by Price, Haggard brings the only new original composition to this session, the easily mournful "If I Ever Get Lucky," while ol' Willie offers his gingerly jazzy vocal phrasing and light picking touch, which hasn't sounded this assured with frontier music since THE RED-HEADED STRANGER.

Rolling Stone (p.114) - Included in Rolling Stone's "50 Top Albums of the Year 2007" -- "Country music with none of the modern trimmings....But it is big and rich in every other way." Entertainment Weekly (p.75) - "[T]his veritable Mount Rushmore mostly revisits forgotten country classics, making this a particularly tasty hall-of-famer hookup." -- Grade: B+ Dirty Linen (p.49) - "Together, there's a certain fraternal bond and tight-knit chemistry that allows each artist enough space to shine individually as well as to collaborate freely as egoless peers." Have the CD..Saw the show..OMG At 57, not much impresses me in the way of "concerts" or "shows". Most seem "canned". These gentlemen remember what entertainment really is! ADMIRATION is the word that describes their collective efforts in Augusta, Maine. And, pretty little Marty Stewart helped the vetrans shine the way they should! From Three LEGENDS to a GRAMMY? All of these memorable standards take us back to uncluttered pure country sounds with a bit of "today" thrown in. But wait until you hear the new song, ONE HELL OF A RIDE, a bonus cut on the newly released Vinyl LP. Written by Segrest, Shepherd & Segrest of Montgomery, Alabama (home of 'ol HANK), and close friends of Ray Price, this song is the story of their lives, and the lives of just ordinary hard-working folks out there. The LP is destined to become a COLLECTOR'S EDITION since this is a first for the three together, and may never happen again. They start up the Last Of The Breed Tour again in August, each show ending with "One Hell Of A Ride." - One hell of a song! Submitted by GiGi E (Montgomery, AL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Kaukasian Kings of C & W First things first, before someone assumes something dreadful, the short headline is meant to be a JOKE, comprende ? Now that we have that out of the way, I'll not make this long-windedly.
If you can't buy this 2-cd project by just the Big 3 artists' names on the front, then you don't have any business relating to anyone that one knows country music from A to Z. Period.
You should not have to wonder as to how these guys sound together. Just pick it up and take it to the nearest cash register and buy it. End of story. Thank you very much. Enjoy this with a cold, iced down(big-assed) bucket of longnecks, while leaning back in an old wooden chair with feet propped up on the hitchin' post out back. Adios compadres. | | Willie Nelson You Don't Know Me: Songs Of Cindy Walker CD (2006)
Last Of The Breed CD music
$8.49 Country legend Willie Nelson was remarkably prolific in the first years of the 21st century, releasing numerous studio and concert albums, which featured intriguing stylistic departures (the reggae-tinged COUNTRYMAN) and a wide array of guest stars (the live OUTLAWS & ANGELS). On 2006's YOU DON'T KNOW ME, Nelson gets back to his roots with an amiable set of Western swing tunes all penned (at least in part) by underrated songwriter Cindy Walker, both an old friend of the famously mellow artist and a fellow Texan. Many ...

Last Of The Breed songs
$11.99 Johnny Cash's final album, AMERICAN V: A HUNDRED HIGHWAYS, is a moving and fitting swan song for the legendary performer. Like Cash's other recordings with producer Rick Rubin, AMERICAN V is quiet, intense, and minimal; it creates a thrilling intimacy by keeping the focus on Cash's aging voice and increasingly soulful, nuanced phrasing.
The album was produced piecemeal, with Cash's vocal tracks recorded mere months ...

Last Of The Breed CD music
$10.29 By the early '50s, Al Dexter's popularity had faded -- his last major hits were in 1948. But when the Texas singer was still on top, he was among country's more progressive and cutting-edge artists. Dexter, who favored an unassuming, easygoing style of singing, managed to influence hardcore honky tonk and Nashville country-pop at the same time, and he also demonstrated that a country artist could successfully incorporate swing, classic jazz, and jump blues elements. ...
