| | Eccentric Soul: Twinight's Lunar Rotation CD
In the `60s and `70s, Chicago was home to one of America's most fertile soul music scenes, and though native sons like Sam Cooke, Curtis Mayfield, and Lou Rawls would play major roles in the development of soul music, hundreds of equally talented singers and musicians labored in relative obscurity on homegrown labels, creating top-shelf soul music for a small but devoted local audience. Numero Records' TWINIGHT'S LUNAR ROTATION gathers 50 of the most sought-after recordings released on Syl Johnson's Twinight imprint, arguably the strongest of Chicago's independently distributed soul labels. The material here ranges from the sweet soul harmonies of the Kaldirons to the blistering instrumental funk of the Pieces of Peace.

The Way Ahead was a turning point for Archie Shepp. For starters, he had looked all over the jazz/improv arena for the proper combination of players -- without a piano. One can speculate that this was because he cut his first teeth with pianist Cecil Taylor and that would perhaps ruin anybody for life. Recorded in 1969, The Way Ahead featured Ron Carter on bass, Grachan Moncur III's trombone, Jimmy Owens' trumpet, and drums by either Beaver Harris or Roy Haynes, with Walter Davis, Jr. on piano. The set is a glorious stretch of the old and new, with deep blues, gospel, and plenty of guttersnipe swing in the mix. From the post-bop blues ...

Eccentric Soul: Twinight's Lunar Rotation CD music
$10.89 Though R&B pinup boy Jaheim's artistic focus is on life in the ghetto, he doesn't fall in line with the confrontational hip-hoppers who revel in the difficulties, violence, and harshness of urban life. Instead, as the album's title suggests, he focuses on the romance that blossoms even on the mean streets.
GHETTO LOVE roams smoothly from the sultry slow jam of "Looking for Love" to the '70s-style funk backing and forceful beat of "Let it Go" and the hip-hop-oriented "Li'l ...
