Congolese singer Koffi Olomide is a larger than life character in African music. Going by a host of names, including Large Degaires, Akram Bourge, Mokonzi, and at least a dozen others, Olomide's topical and personal approach to soukous has earned him a large audience, and his fiery outspokenness has drawn at least as many musical foes as friends. This varied set makes a nice introduction to the controversial Olomide, including sides like the sultry "Dulcinée," the sparkling "Dieu Voit Tout," and the jazzy ballad "Effervescent." ~ Steve Leggett Koffi Olomide African Classics Songs | 1. | G.B. | | Rosavelt Story Of Gasoline CD (2004)
African Classics songs
$16.45 Some of the press Rosavelt were getting around the time of their third album was peppered with Replacements comparisons, but The Story of Gasoline seems more linked to mainstream heartland rock than the punkier Replacements were. It's positioned somewhere between accomplished roots rock & roll and an indie rock sensibility, and thus it makes sense that it was produced by Don Dixon, whose resumé included several such fence-straddling acts. Christopher Allen's brusque, slightly hoarse vocals and the well-timed, anthemic backup harmonies are the key factors that elevate this slightly above the average for a style that had been mined pretty heavily in the two decades or so prior to this release. Fleeting intimacies, painful breakups, insecurities, psychic torment, and the emptiness of living without a relationship are themes that bounce around much of the album, and while Allen sings and writes like he means it, there's also some predictability to how these issues are addressed in song here. At least he has the gumption to use some language that doesn't beat around the bush, opening "The Last Heartache" with the declaration "a big bang, a last f*ck," and admitting in "Desperate for Cool" to being "such a fool for going down on it, such a fool for going down on you." ~ Richie Unterberger
ROSAVELTChristopher Allen: vocals, guitar, songs Doug McKeon: bass, vocalsMiles Loretta: drums, vocalsThe Story of Gasoline, Rosavelt's third album, opens with a false start. Twanging their way through the intro to the title tune, the band gets as far as the first line when singer/guitarist Chris Allen abruptly stops his cohorts and says, "I wanna do that different." They oblige, turning up the volume to 11 and ravaging the song in vintage Replacements ...
| | Jon Butcher Equation CD (2003)
African Classics album
$16.19 In May 2002, John Butcher was in Canada for a short tour, appearing with the quartet Polwechsel at the Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville, in particular. He also visited Toronto for a concert at the Music Gallery in an ad hoc trio with turntablist Mike Hansen and percussionist Tomasz Krakowiak. Both are considerably less-known than the English saxophonist; it would have been easy, even tempting to let him run the show. Instead, the trio turns out to be very egalitarian -- add to that unusual and exciting. Among legions of experimental turntablists looking for sounds from the record player itself, Hansen appears almost anachronistic. His style is refreshing, since it doesn't rule out referencing, yet it remains cutting-edge, abstract, and perplexing. One could compare him to Martin Tétreault in his early Ambiances Magnétiques years (think Des Pas et des Mois or Bruire's L'Ame de l'Objet). Krakowiak is a textural player, a rubber and a scratcher more than hitter. Two-thirds of the time, his contribution remains unnoticed as it blends with the surface noise stutters of the vinyl and the breathing, key clicking, and needlepoint blowing of Butcher. The latter explores in this session his most intriguing self-developed techniques, his controlled feedback playing ...
