Moravec: Tempest Fantasy, Etc / Krakauer, Trio Solisti
$13.25 Composer Michael Hoppe usually plays piano and keyboard on his recordings; on Quiet Storms: Romances for Flute and Harp, he turns the performing duties over to harpist Lou Anne Neill and flautist Louise Di Tullio. The flute and harp are relatively quiet, so you may be tempted to put the album on for background music. Don't be surprised if the music suddenly carries you away through buried emotions to distant thoughts. Hoppe knows how to craft a moving melody, and he takes you there in style. "Quiet Storms," "Andrew's Theme" (from Misunderstood), the somber "October Poem," "Waltz for Raphael," and "Nocturne" are romantic, yet gripping. There are lighter contrasts: "Sand Castles" has a carefree, windblown touch with a cadence exactly like patting down sand; "Petite Giselle" springs through meadows buoyantly; "Avalon" is mysterious, and "Pieces of the Moon" is dreamy. Soft environmental sounds (thunder, rain) frame the album on "Eyes of the Wind Theme." Here, the harp sounds like raindrops falling on a warm puddle or blowing in the breeze. A lovely album. (By the way, Hoppe added to the artistry of the album by contributing two stormy (visual) landscapes for the liner notes.) ~ Carol Wright
Composed by Michael Hoppe.

Moravec: Tempest Fantasy, Etc / Krakauer, Trio Solisti
$15.19 This beautiful CD introduces the listeners to the art of laureate of the All-Russian Competition, Rosconcert soloist, balalaika player Oleg Gitlin.Oleg Gitlin is a famous, award-winning balalaika virtuoso who has performed in the most distinguished theatres and concert halls throughout Russia, Europe , America and Israel.Born in Leningrad in 1951,Gitlin started playing the balalaika and grew fond of it already in his childhood when his parents presented him with the instrument on his birthday. He studied at the Leningrad Conservatoire with the renowned balalaika player Professor A. Shalov. In 1969 Gitlin came in first at the All-Russia competition of students of musical colleges (Ivanovo) and later continued his education at the Gnessin Pedagogical Institute of Music(class of Russian Artists ,Professor P.Necheporenko.) In 1972, being a student, he became laureate of the All-Russia competition of folk instrumentalists in Moscow. From that moment he started giving concerts around the country, Europe, America and Israel recording at All-Union Radio and giving classes. In the vast repertoire of the musician there are pieces on folk themes, works by Russian composers for balalaika, and popular classical music.Oleg Gitlin plays on a unique and exceptionally melodious balalaika, created by a world-famous balalaika-maker.All the musicians working with Gitlin are struck by his industriousness. Every detail is important for him, each note should be perfectly impressive. The musician is on a constant quest for perfection and he is achieving the needed results.Tracks1-8 present Gitlin playing to the accompaniment of guitarist Vladimir Tervo, laureate of the International guitarist competition in Havana. Together they created a number of original transcriptions of popular classical pieces, which gained new fresh shades due to the new instrumental sound.Tracks 9-12 present the recordings to the accompaniment of the piano. Here you can hear works, which are not frequent in the repertoire of balalaika players because of their difficulty.
