Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; English Subtitles Pulp fiction writer Mickey King gets mixed up with gangsters and murder on the island of Malta in this parody of private eye mysteries.
It all begins when movie legend Preston Gilbert hires King to ghostwrite an autobiography about his colorful life. And Gilbert, who now lives in a secluded villa with his mistress, wife and bodyguard, will pull no punches in the book. The former actor wants to include the names of the many shady people he's known over the years.
But then Gilbert ends up dead, and King turns sleuth to find out who killed him. In the process, the writer finds himself in the same dangerous position as the famous screen private eyes who have inspired him. A retired expatriate Hollywood actor, who starred in gangster movies, hires a paperback writer to ghost his autobiography. But the mystery writer soon becomes a target for murder. Color by DeLuxe.
Additional cast: Victor Mercieca (Prince Cippola), Joe Zammit Cordina (Santana), Ave Ninchi (Chambermaid), Maria Quasimodo (Senora Pavone), Cyrus Elias (First Guide), Cettina Borg Oliver (Gilbert's Mother), Guiseppe Mallia (Cripple), Roy Marmara (Mario) and Louis Caruana (Toni).
A Klinger-Caine-Hodges production. Pulp film
$10.49 This relatively little-known film is widely hailed by fans of the macabre. Truly ahead of its time, NIGHTMARE ALLEY is set in the gritty, surrealistic world of traveling carnivals, where eccentric people of all possible varieties interact on a daily basis. In a departure from his usual roles as the Hollywood leading man, handsome Tyrone Power plays a morally questionable circus apprentice determined to climb the carnival ladder no matter what the price. Powers shows immense range in what was arguably his finest role ever as the sometimes unrecognizably scruffy circus man with a liking for the bottle. Director Edmund Goulding (DARK VICTORY) gives the carnival setting a dark, somber feel that contradicts the film's more upbeat ending. In spite of this ending tacked on by the studio system, NIGHTMARE ...

| | Born To Win DVD (1971) Full Frame; Collector's Edition
Pulp review
$5.29 Ivan Passer's BORN TO WIN is a fascinating, though widely overlooked, time capsule that reflects the down-and-dirty New York City of the early 1970s. In a career filled with memorable performances, George Segal is once again astounding as J, a heroin addict whose life has begun to spiral out of control. No longer interested in being a hairdresser, J spends his days searching for another fix. Along the way, he meets Parm (Karen Black), another weary soul who clings desperately to J. As J gets more and more lost in the haze of his addiction, he must face up to the junky life that has trapped him.
BORN TO WIN marks Czech director Passer's first foray into American filmmaking. While his unflinchingly honest approach to the material may have contributed to the picture's lackluster box office return (as opposed to, say, Jerry Shatzberg's THE PANIC IN NEEDLE PARK), the film nonetheless remains a vital contribution to the canon of 1970s American cinema. This ...
