| | Frank Tiberi 4 Brothers 7 CD Frank Tiberi Discography of CDs
This septet tribute to Woody Herman features a band of Herman alumni put together by Frank Tiberi, who took over leading Herman's band after his death. In addition to Tiberi on tenor sax, Larry McKenna and John Nugent also play tenor, with Mike Brignola on baritone sax; the rhythm section includes pianist David Berkman, bassist Lynn Seaton, and drummer Matt Wilson. While not all of the songs were a part of Herman's repertoire, the influence is apparent on most tracks. The brisk treatment of "Four Brothers" makes the group sound like a big band, with tight ensembles and exciting solos by each of the saxophonists, with Brignola adapting an Al Cohn arrangement of Jimmy Giuffre's famous piece. Everyone takes a chorus in the breezy rendition of "Woody 'n You," while Seaton's simultaneous singing in unison with his arco bass (à la Major Holley), with a deep growling vocal, is a highlight of the bluesy "Four of a Kind." Tiberi switches to soprano for a stroll through John Coltrane's "Central Park West" and also penned two of the compositions heard on this fun-filled session. Highly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden

| | Bill Holman Band Live CD (2005)
4 Brothers 7 CD music
$13.45 Although Bill Holman is one of the all-time great arrangers and the leader of a stirring big band in the Los Angeles area, this was his first recording as a leader in seven years. Performed at a Maynard Ferguson tribute convention/festival put on by Ken Poston, the music played by the Bill Holman Orchestra is a little more boppish than usual for a Holman set, particularly the romping "Zoot 'n' Al," a tribute to Zoot Sims and Al Cohn. However, Holman's arrangements are quite complex, full of surprises and full of excitement. Whether it be a major reworking of the Beatles' "A Day in the Life" and Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee," or such originals as "Woodrow" (for Woody Herman) and "The Bebop Love Song," the music is full of surprising twists and turns. The solos ...

| | Carl Saunders Lost Bill Holman Charts CD (2007)
4 Brothers 7 album
$13.25 In the early '80s, saxophonist Ted Richardson, a geologist by day, commissioned Bill Holman to write material for a septet album. After all of the ten arrangements were written, the project never took place and the charts sat in a closet for 20 years. Carl Saunders, lead trumpeter with Holman for many years and a brilliant soloist, unearthed the arrangements, and on this 2007 CD the music was finally recorded. Since Holman is one of the most brilliant arrangers in jazz history, the wait was worth it. While there are many fine solos along the way by ...
| | Phil Norman Totally Live At Catalina Jazz Club: In Memory Of Bob Florence CDs (2008)
4 Brothers 7 CD music
$14.29 The Phil Norman Tentet intended their live recording at Catalina Jazz Club to be a tribute in part to veteran composer/arranger/pianist Bob Florence, who had worked with Norman's tentet as a sideman when he wasn't leading his own big band. Sadly, Florence passed away a few months prior to the release of this double CD. In any case, Norman's tentet features some of the top West Coast musicians, including trumpeters Carl Saunders and Ron Stout, pianist Christian Jacob (a fine leader himself and important asset to singer Tierney ...

$6.75 Long before the phrase, "Seattle scene" spoke of an impact that a new generation of musicians was having on rock music, Alice in Chains was struggling to be recognized in the shadow of bands that were more focused on image than craft. But despite all he went through, the drummer was still able to provide some inspired performances here and there. One of them came on April 17, 1973, when he was joined by tenor saxman Eddie Shu, ...
