Late Night Moods Standard Bossa album
$15.05 Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink Ray Davies. His very presence as arranger and lead vocal means The Kinks Choral Collection isn't nearly as stuffy and middlebrow as so many of these orchestral rock albums; he manages to inject some semblance of rock & roll by pushing the songs forward with guitar, and letting the rhythms swing instead of plod. This looseness is the first big surprise of the album. The second is its unrepentant but quite possibly accidental silliness, how many of the major guitar riffs are transposed for choir, an audacious idea in concept that's simply goofy in practice. These choral chants hamper the hardest rocking songs here -- "You Really Got Me," "All Day and All of the Night," "Victoria" -- and they're mercifully absent from the slower tunes, songs that benefit from the gentle layered harmonies. In comparison to most orchestral and choral rock albums, these arrangements are subtle and sensitive, providing a nice counterpart for the surprising dose of rock & roll, both things that make The Kinks Choral Collection one of the ...
| | Rosemary Clooney Songs From White Christmas (& Other Yuletide Favorites) CD (1997)
Late Night Moods Standard Bossa CD music
$5.99 All the material on Songs from White Christmas (And Other Yuletide Favorites) was recorded in the mid-'50s, when Rosemary Clooney was at something of a peak. Her voice was supple, her popularity high, and she was working with such luminaries as Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington. Here, she doesn't flex her jazz muscles, which is only appropriate since holiday music ...

| | Dave Brubeck Time Out CD (1959) Remastered
Late Night Moods Standard Bossa songs
$6.55 Dave Brubeck's TIME OUT ranks alongside Miles Davis' KIND OF BLUE as one of the few advanced jazz masterpieces to achieve great commercial success. In fact, the widespread popularity of TIME OUT, with its cool-toned ambience, smooth style, and elements borrowed from classical music, helped make modern jazz a mainstream phenomenon.
The ubiquitous "Take Five" may be overplayed, but that doesn't diminish the joy of its complex melodic hooks, its perfectly executed solos, or the swinging slink of its 5/4 signature. "Blue Rondo a la Turk" collages Mozart, cool ...
| | Herb Alpert South Of The Border CD (1964) Remastered; Special Edition
Late Night Moods Standard Bossa album
$9.99 Herb Alpert/Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass/Tijuana Brass: Herb Alpert (trumpet); John Pisano (electric guitar); Tonni Kalash (trumpet); Bob Edmondson (trombone); Lou Pagani (piano); Pat Senatore (bass guitar); Nick Ceroli (drums).
Herb Alpert was still using an array of SoCal studio all-stars as his Tijuana Brass when South of the Border (1964) began to restore the combo's good name after the modest Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass, Vol. 2 (1963) failed to ignite a fire in listener's ears. In his essay accompanying Shout! Factory's 2005 Signature Series reissue of South of the Border, Alpert comments that the Sol Lake composition "Mexican Shuffle" "opened a new door for me." That passageway meant the loss of the Tijuana Brass' practically forced mariachi style and the rise of Alpert's approach in arranging familiar melodies in fresh, creative settings. Nowhere would this stylistic progression be as pronounced as in the horn-driven updates of several then-concurrent chart hits. For instance, the mod sonic wrinkle in "Girl from Ipanema" emits a darkness veiled in mystery, directly contrasting the light buoyancy of "Hello! Dolly" or the footloose feel of the Beatles' "All My Loving." They seamlessly fit in with Sol Lake's "Salud, Amor y Dinero" and a cover of Julius Wechter's playful mid-tempo "Up Cherry Street" -- which Wechter's ...
| | Les Paul & Friends: American Made World Played CD (2005)
Late Night Moods Standard Bossa CD music
$11.29 Released in celebration of Les Paul's 90th birthday, AMERICAN MADE WORLD PLAYED pays tribute to the master guitarist and inventor who changed the face of jazz, country, blues, and rock with his recording and guitar-design innovations. While the lineup here is stellar and includes vocalists Sting, Joss Stone, and Mick Hucknall (Simply Red), and guitarists Joe Perry (Aerosmith) and Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi), among others, the album is at its best when it allows Paul to shine in an instrumental setting, as on the slinky rendition of Duke Ellington's "Caravan" and the funky "69 Freedom Special."
