| | Laura Pausini Primavera In Anticipo CD (2008)
Rom Best CD music
$13.79 Italian vocalist Laura Pausini became a worldwide sensation during the first 10 years of her recording career (although her success in America is minimal compared to Europe and Latin America). PRIMAVERA IN ANTICIPO, released in 2008 in both Italian and Spanish versions, extends Pausini's command over the adult contemporary form, offering up 14 tracks that play like foreign-language versions of Celine Dion or Phil Collins. Like Pausini's previous releases, PRIMAVERA IN ANTICIPO is layered with glossy production, over which the vocalist gives passionate, dramatic performances. Highlights include "Invece No" and "Primavera ...

| | Celtic Woman The Greatest Journey: Essential Collection CD (2008) Bonus Tracks
Rom Best songs
$15.15 Celtic Woman, initially a one-shot collaboration by six leading Irish vocalists for a 2004 PBS special, struck a chord of adoration for the Emerald Isle, a fancy affecting both sides of the Atlantic, and swiftly became a permanent collective. THE GREATEST JOURNEY captures many of the best moments of elegant harmonizing by the act, from their serene and rapturous take on Enya's "Orinoco Flow" to the mournful yet poppily uplifting indigenous folk of "You Raise Me Up."
Import pressing includes two bonus tracks, Mo Ghile Mear (Live From Slane Castle) and Spanish Lady (Live From Slane Castle). Since their beginning in 2005, Irish vocal phenomenon Celtic Woman have sold 4 million units worldwide and occupied the #1 spot on the Billboard World Music Chart for a record-breaking 90 consecutive weeks. The Greatest Journey: Essential ...

| | World Psychedelic Classics 3: Love's A Real Thing: The Funky, Fuzzy Sounds Of West Africa CD (2005)
Rom Best CD music
$10.55 Love's a Real Thing is an excellent introduction into the wild sound world of West Africa in the '70s. As Ronnie Graham points out in his superb liner notes, the '60s were a time of assimilation for much of the popular music of Africa. Many bands were playing a hybrid of Latin and African music typified by the Congolese rhumba of Franco & OK Jazz. The '70s were a different bag, though, with the heavy electric sounds of Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Cream, and others seeping into the consciousness of a new generation of Africans who were also contending with their own emerging sense of identity. The results are raucous, exuberant melting pots of funky soul, psychedelic rock, and honey-sweet Latin horns mixed through the sensibilities of extremely talented African bands on the cusp of developing styles like soukous, mbalax, and Afro-beat. Senegal's Star Band Number One (aka Etoile de Dakar and confusingly billed here as No. 1 de No. 1), were already seasoned veterans by the dawn of the 1970s, and the sound of their "Guajira Van" with its sinewy fuzz guitar solo and talking drum stabs is glorious proto-mbalax. Elsewhere, there are songs more directly inspired by rock and soul. "Allah Wakbarr" by Ofo & the Black Company has a heavy acid rock guitar lead competing with a conga drum for the top of the mix. The title cut, "Love's a Real Thing" by Gambia's Super Eagles, is a gritty organ and electric guitar-driven soul number that could have come out of Memphis' Stax Records. One of the later period numbers, William Onyeabor's "Better Change Your Mind" from 1978, is sophisticated Afro-soul riding on an alien keyboard line. "Keleya" from ...
| | Lester Young Trio CD (1951)
Rom Best music CDs
$12.49 Lester Young's significance in jazz is not hard to gauge. His playing influenced almost every saxophonist that came after him. On this release, we hear Young teamed up with two other jazz legends, drummer Buddy Rich and Nat "King" Cole on piano. Following 10 tracks by this unique trio, we are treated to four additional tunes as performed by a sextet led by Young.
The trio portion of this album is especially lush and intriguing, featuring wonderful renditions of Young's original, "Back to the Land," Gershwin's "The Man I Love," and a duet version of the gorgeous ballad, "Peg O' My Heart" (Rich had gone out to get something to eat). Cole's intimate piano style wonderfully complements ...

| | Steff Mahan 42.5 CD (2004)
Rom Best album
$14.79 Review:"Steff Mahan has been described as alt-country, but this CD rocks, rolls, gets bluesy and then rips your heart out with love songs that quite possibly will make you weep.. Steff's songs are about real life stuff, sometimes raw---but frankly, so well crafted there's no wonder these ten tunes are so catchy. They'll catch you and keep you." ---gyrlgrooveAbout the CD:After a year long U.S. tour to promote her debut album, Nashville-based artist, Steff Mahan, has released her second Lounge Hound Records project titled 42.50. Produced by Michael Grimes (Grimey), 42.50 is a compelling collection of people, places, and stories from life on the road that rocks with the talents of Will ...
