(1 Customer Review)
Issued a full decade after Hanson's major-label debut, MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, 2007's THE WALK finds siblings Isaac, Taylor, and Zac Hanson far from their precocious "MMMBop" beginnings, with all of the brothers married and, in some cases, fathers. Continuing in the more mature vein of '04's UNDERNEATH, this outing finds the Tulsa, Oklahoma-based trio still nodding to their soul-inspired roots (see the funky and slightly melancholy "Something Going Round"), while staying in a guitar-driven rock direction. While some bands flounder in post-major scenarios, Hanson have thrived by setting up their own label (3CG) and remaining true to their own collective muse, a point hit home by the emotive and assured "Great Divide," one of the many standout tracks on THE WALK.
Japanese pressing of their 2007 album features earliest release along with two bonus tracks. Victor.

$13.55 With BLACK AND WHITE, writer-director James Toback (FINGERS, TWO GIRLS AND A GUY) confronts the topic of race head on--most specifically, the influence of black urban hip-hop culture on white America. Set in New York City as the 1990s wind to a close, the film is told in a broad, episodic fashion, interweaving several different story lines in order to address a multitude of ideas. In the most comedic, a white documentarian (Brooke Shields) and her gay husband (Robert Downey Jr.) follow a group of affluent white teenagers (led by Bijou Phillips) around the city as they unabashedly pursue a Staten Island hip-hop crew. As the leader of ...

$14.45 Acclaimed actor Liev Schrieber (DAYTRIPPERS, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE) makes his directorial debut in this adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer's bestselling novel about a young Jewish-American writer of the same name. Mixing equal parts black comedy and poignant drama, the film follows Jonathan (Elijah Wood) as he travels to the Ukraine to solve a family secret. There he meets his barely legitimate tour guides: Alex (Eugene Hutz, member of the folk-punk band Gogol Bordello), a cosmopolitan playboy obsessed with Michael Jackson and other American icons; Alex's grandfather (Boris Leskin), a man worn down by life who seems to be losing his grip on reality; and Sammy Davis, Jr. Jr, the "seeing-eye bitch" dog who comes along for the ride. As Jonathan closes in on his goal--to find the story behind the woman who saved his grandfather during the Holocaust--it becomes clear that Alex's grandfather has a dark secret of his own that needs to be, as the film suggests, illuminated.

| | Tom Waits Beautiful Maladies: The Island Years CD (1998)
Walk music CDs
$10.79 Even if Tom Waits had ended his career in the early 1980s, before he moved over to Island Records, he would still be regarded as a mighty member of the singer/songwriter elite. This makes it all the more impressive that he completely re-invented himself after switching labels in the mid-'80s, most notably with the Holy Trinity of SWORDFISHTROMBONES, RAIN DOGS, and FRANK'S WILD YEARS. On these albums, whose highlights make up the meat of BEAUTIFUL MALADIES, Waits abandoned the jazzy, piano-bound beatnik persona he'd carefully maintained throughout the '70s. Instead he created a groundbreaking patchwork that encompassed polkas, blues, deranged cabaret, the avant-garde, and more, in a funhouse-mirror reflection of Howlin' Wolf, Kurt Weill, and Harry Partch. The fact that he'd lost none of his masterful songwriting acumen in the process insured that Waits's Island recordings, so definitively represented here, would be his lasting legacy.
Personnel: Tom Waits (vocals, banjo, piano, organ, pump organ, chamberlin, congas, percussion); Larry Taylor (bass voice, guitar, acoustic bass, double bass, upright bass); Fred Tackett (guitar, electric guitar, banjo); Joe Gore, Marc Ribot (guitar, banjo); Chris Spedding, G.E. Smith, Moris Tepper, Robert Quine (guitar); Greg Cohen (banjo, viola, accordion, alto horn, percussion); Ralph Carney (violin, saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, bass saxophone); Matthew Brubeck (cello); Josef Brinckmann, William Shimmel, Willy Schwarz (accordion); Randall Aldcroft (baritone saxophone, trombone); Joe Romano (trombone); William Schimmel (piano, pump organ); Mule Patterson (piano, drums, percussion); Francis Thumm (harmonium, anklung); Ronnie Barron (organ); Victor Feldman (marimba, drums, bass drum, brake drums, shaker); Bobby Previte (marimba, percussion); Tony Garnier (double bass); Les Claypool (electric bass); Mickey Curry, Stephen Hodges (drums); Michael Blair (congas, maracas, percussion); Don Neely (musical saw); Angela Brown, Leslie Holland, Lynne Jordan (background vocals).

| | New Order Get Ready CD (2001)
Walk songs
$10.89 Between 1993 and 2001, despite numerous "new" musical styles, the only things to emerge from the New Order camp were remixes and rumors--of beak-ups, breakdowns, and the like. The arrival of GET READY in 2001, the band's first album of new material since REPUBLIC, shows a band clearly still interested in doing things on its own terms. When Peter Hook's bass kicks in around the two-minute mark of the lead track "Crystal," it is like a dose of pure oxygen--THIS is New Order.
The trio of guitar-based rockers, "Primitive Notion," "Slow Jam," and "Rock the Shack," all further the point--these are songs that no other band could have recorded (though the latter does include guest appearances by members of Primal Scream). For fans of the band's LOW-LIFE period, look no further than "Turn My Way" and "Run Wild," both of which take that album's confessional lyrics and gentle musical swagger and update them for the new millennium.
Produced by Steve Osbourne (Curve, Happy Mondays), Get Ready is New Order's first album since 93's 'Republic'. Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins) and Bobby Gillespie & Andrew Innes (Primal Scream) are featured here. This Reprise Records release includes the singles 'Crystal' ...
