Hank Crawford's '60s sides for Atlantic rightfully established him among the preeminent soul-jazz saxophonists. For pure phrasing and feel, Crawford was in a class by himself. When Creed Taylor kicked off CTI in 1970, he brought Crawford on board immediately. This date from 1973 -- one of eight cut between 1971 and 1978 -- is Crawford's strongest for the label and one of the better records of his career, though jazz purists would never agree. Produced and arranged by Bob James with a smoking cast that includes Joe Beck, Idris Muhammad, Richard Tee, and Bob Cranshaw, as well as a brass section of crack New York studio cats, Wildflower is the album Crawford had been trying to make since 1971. Recorded in two days, the band provides a slick, right, colorful platform for Crawford's melodic improvisation that is rooted in the art of the phrase. One long note held on "Mr. Blues" or a series of carefully articulated verbal feelings, such as on "Corazon," may not step out of the groove, but make it both a deeper blue and as wide as the human heart's complexity. On the title cut, with a vocal chorus in the background, Crawford turns a pop melody into a torrent of raw emotionalism and savvy groove-conscious glory. James' charts are big but never obtrusive; they point in one direction only, to bring that huge soul sound out of Crawford's alto -- check out the way the melody line breaks down into the solo in Stevie Wonder's "You've Got It Bad Girl," or the backbeat arpeggio exercises in "Good Morning Heartache." This record is so hot the only soul-jazz it can be compared to in both its contemporary form and funky feel are Grover Washington's Feels So Good and Mister Magic issues. In other words, Crawford's Wildflower is indispensable as a shining example of '70s groove jazz at its best. ~ Thom Jurek

On A Few Miles from Memphis, recorded by pianist Harold Mabern in 1968, he's joined by tenors George Coleman and Buddy Terry, bassist Bill Lee, and drummer Walter Perkins for a bluesy, rhythm-filled set featuring familiar fare like "A Treat for Bea" and fun originals like "Walkin' Back." There's also the odd inclusion of "There's a Kind of Hush," a pop song that comes out sounding like an old standard here. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr. When record labels like ...

Raven presents the very best of Solomon Burke's recordings for MGM in the 1970s, many on CD for the first time. Raven's 2006 two-fer Nutbush City Limits/Feel Good combines two of Ike & Tina Turner's last albums together and adds five bonus tracks, three of which were taken from other Ike & Tina albums from the early '70s, one taken from a Tina solo record, and one disco mix of "Nutbush City Limits." The album that arrives first on this two-fer was actually the last of these two to be released: Nutbush City Limits appeared in 1973, a year after Feel Good, but its title track is one ...

Mixing an infectious brew of country-and-pop-tinged soul, 1960's singer Timi Yuro's live performance includes the classic cut "Hurt." The white performer who astounded everyone with the depth of her music also performs "Place in the Sun," "Make the World go Away," and "Timi Talks." The April 1969 performance at PJ's club in Los Angeles was recorded for an album that almost saw release in August of that same year, but was withdrawn just before issue. Five of the eight tracks that would have comprised that set did show up on the 1976 LP The Timi Yuro Album, but the 2000 Live at PJ's release on RPM marks the first time the entire canceled album has been officially available. What's more, it adds three alternate takes ...

First Noel
Phil Sheeran First Noel CD  (2000)

Wildflower
CD $13.15
The working title of this collection of Christmas songs was called "Christmas II" mainly because it was my second Christmas CD. I then decided to name it after the heart felt First Noel featuring R&B singer and collaborator "Joaquin". The CD covers a lot of ground stylistically from my various musical influences Jazz, Pop, R&B, Brazilian, Smooth Jazz, Flamenco and Classical. There's something here for everyone... Well almost everyone sorry no rock guitar maybe the next one! The song "Home for the Holidays" and "Winter Wonderland" are upbeat jazzy and toe tappin. The lush Brian McKnight's "Let It Snow" originally performed by the Backstreet Boys and the moving rendition of Natale Cole's version of "My Grown-up Christmas List". Ending the collection is the lyrical and ever popular holiday classical J.S. Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" performed as a guitar duet.Produced by: Phil SheeranREVIEW ------- It is always good to see Phil Sheeran when the holidays roll around. Two years ago, I reviewed I'll Be Home for Christmas, Sheeran's 1996 release, and now Mr. Smooth Jazz returns with The First Noel. Like the finest wines, most class acts do get better with age, and Sheeran does not disappoint; I like this holiday offering even more than the first (although I do miss the sweet simplicity of the guitar solos included on the earlier CD).Sheeran is a jazz guitarist/composer who spans a broad range of musical genres here--from classical to Brazilian to pure pop. At its heart, though, this music is decidedly Smooth Jazz--with some attitude, but satiny smooth all the same. Sheeran's accomplished ensemble provides a seamless mesh with his guitars; special nods go to the sax man (George Shelby) and keyboards master (Leon Bisquera). If you are hankering for almost an hour of well-executed jazz instrumentals when the December winds begin to blow, then Sheeran and his talented pals should make very fine company. My favorite tracks are the title cut The First Noel, which has a playful, yet mystical, feel, and the percussive It Came Upon a Midnight Clear. The former contains the album's only singing; Joaquin's subtle vocalizations act as just one additional musical instrument, providing an overarching layer of sound. Very, very lovely. The latter number has a tap-tap-tappin' ...
