| | Toby Keith American Ride CD (2009)
What Stirs Within
$11.99 Personnel: Ilya Toshinsky (acoustic guitar, banjo); Steven Sheehan (acoustic guitar); Jerry McPherson, Kenny Greenberg, Brent Mason (electric guitar); Paul Franklin (dobro); Randy Scruggs (banjo); Aubrey Haynie (mandolin, fiddle); John Catchings, Kristin Wilkinson, Mary Kathryn Van Osdale, David Angell (strings); Dave Koz (saxophone); Steve Nathan (piano, keyboards); Charles Judge (synthesizer, programming); Chris McHugh (drums); Jim Hoke (Jew's harp); Eric Darken, Arthur Thompson (percussion); Angela Primm, Perry Coleman, Gayle Mayes (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Mills Logan. With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which ...

| | Deep Purple In Rock CD (1970) Gold
What Stirs Within
$20.29 Deep Purple: Ian Gillan (vocals); Ritchie Blackmore (guitar); Jon Lord (keyboards); Roger Glover (bass); Ian Paice (drums). Engineers: Martin Birch, Andy Knight, Phillip McDonald. After satisfying all of their classical music kinks with keyboard player Jon Lord's overblown Concerto for Group and Orchestra, Deep Purple's soon to be classic Mark II version made its proper debut and established the sonic blueprint that would immortalize this lineup of the band on 1970's awesome In Rock. The cacophony of sound (spearheaded by Ritchie Blackmore's blistering guitar solo) introducing opener "Speed King" made it immediately obvious that ...

| | Trojan Box Set: Ska CDs (1999) Boxed Set
What Stirs Within
$30.29 All tracks have been digitally remastered. Guaranteed to drive the purists around the bend, this budget-priced box set skimps on the packaging, but does make up for it with 50 tracks spread across three CDs. As the cynical have learned to expect, although advertised as a ska compilation, it does indeed stray repeatedly into rocksteady. Once upon a time, Trojan knew the difference, but apparently no longer. Admittedly though, it is classic rocksteady -- the Paragons, the Tamlins, the Valentines, with their sensational "Blam Blam Fever," and a clutch of other sublime vocal groups -- but let's get back to the ska. And here's the bit that will really infuriate collectors: Trojan has trawled through their archives and come up with enough gems to make listeners grit their teeth and buy this set regardless of the genre faux pas. Forget the bundle of big hits like "Get Up Edina" and "Carry Go ...
| | Zao Parade Of Chaos CD (2002)
What Stirs Within
$13.49 Zao: Jesse Smith, Scott Mellinger, Dan Weyandt. Producers: Barry Poynter, Jesse Smith, Scott Mellinger. Parade of Chaos has been hailed as influential metal-core group Zao's final studio album, and while it may lack the intensity that earlier works from the band have embodied, it is a fitting departure for one of the hardcore scene's most valuable players. Frontman Daniel Weyandt returned to contribute vocals after his previous departure, and his offerings here are quite possibly some of his best. The intensity of Weyandt's conviction shines brilliantly on "Free the Three," a song which deals ...

What Stirs Within
$44.15 Devil Soldier, from 1982, represented a quantum leap forward for Loudness. While it proved that the band still needed a little more time to develop their songwriting, it displayed a marked improvement in terms of arrangements, ...
