$12.55 Review by Mark Hooper - Arkansas Times - "When one thinks of trend setters in the world of electronica, very rarely does Little Rock enter into the picture. So, when I received the invitation to Another Theory's page, I never expected what I was about to experience. As I 'logged on,' the track "dark and cold" began to play -- to summarize, WOW! This initial track made me think of the ethereal, transcendent moods of Dead Can Dance, Enigma or Portishead. The piece presented long sustained tones shrouded by, but penetrating through the same sense of infinite silence. A vague similarity to the vocal style of Dave Gahan and Depeche Mode -- and somewhat of some Moby songs, too. Song compositions, counter melodies and base lines like something composed by Trent Reznor and performed by Nine Inch Nails...or even something from Evanescence. The beats of the four tracks provided on A.T.'s MySpace ...

$18.25 You cannot get much more abstract than this, but what makes this so difficult to listen to is its static nature, something that permeates each piece. This sort of musical sculpture is more interesting to perform than to hear. The self-discipline of the performers is something to wonder at, but only for so long. More than an hour-and-a-half of what might appear to be mostly minimalist self-indulgence is wearying, though the addition of John Butcher on the second CD adds some variety. The core of the group Smash and Teeny is Nilan Perera, who performs prepared electric guitar and contributes "effects," and Sarah Peebles, who performs on laptop and shô, which is described as a mouth organ. There are also vocal samples of aircraft performed by Kohei Nishikawa. All the tracks were captured live in a variety of settings. The CD leaflet does not contain any descriptions of the players or the music, but does include color photos of bees and a smoker. The short, low-budget color video, when viewed through a computer running the software program, QuickTime, offers a slow-moving glimpse at the performers, some engagingly abstract calligraphy being created on a canvas by Chung Gong, and views of landscapes and insects, all accompanied by the performers. Perhaps due to the variety, the video is somewhat more absorbing than the strictly audio tracks, though it is largely static, too. Taken as a whole, the 11 musical tracks could be described as a melding of art and ego, where the two become indistinguishable. It might make a nice backdrop for taking a bath, but for pure listening it can be difficult. ~ Steven Loewy
Nilan Perera - altered electric guitar and effects Sarah Peebles - laptop & de-tuned shô (mouth-organ) with guest artists John Butcher - soprano and tenor saxophones and Chung Gong - calligraphy performance (video) CD I Smash and Teeny CD II Smash and Teeny with John Butcher, “Kaladar Kodex” video Gathering brings together the most exceptional music and video art of Toronto duo Smash and Teeny, created live in performance, studio and site-specific outdoor locations in Canada, the U.S. and England between 2001-2003.
