Totem
$14.69 This work is a type of opera based on the great Noh play Izutsu, written by Zeami in the late 14th century. Ayuo has employed the use of hurdy-gurdy, Celtic harp, something he calls "sitar-guitar," Dharma-vina, and traditional gagaku instruments that come from the royal court music of Japan and Korea. But it is the vocals of Makiko Sakurai that pull these disparate elements into a whole so haunting and beautiful that it feels otherworldly at times. Sakurai hovers and swoops, weeps and cries, and philosophically intones over ...

| | Rammstein Reise, Reise CD (2004)
Totem
$11.99 One of the more unlikely success stories in music-business history, German heavy-metal collective Rammstein creates a totally uncompromising and wildly (some would say ridiculously) dramatic sound that combined elements of goth, industrial, Wagnerian opera, and progressive rock, with lyrics sung almost exclusively in German. Rammstein's concerts were even more over-the-top than the ensemble's recorded output, matching the performance art-inspired wackiness of Devo with the gross-out antics of Gwar.
On its fourth album, REISE, REISE, the group continues on its mission to be one of the heaviest, spookiest, and most bizzare acts in rock, delivering one bone crunching, sci-fi/monster-movie-like epic after another. The ...

| | Faun Renaissance CD (2005)
Totem
$11.79 They're German, and they're sincere in what they do -- which is make modern folk music. They're so earnest that it's hard to make fun of them, even when so much of their music resembles an almost goth Enya with pop vocals (courtesy of two female singers). And they certainly dive in ...

| | Liberation: Songs To Benefit Peta CD (2003)
Totem
$4.95 At a bargain-basement price, and with all proceeds going to a good cause -- PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals -- Liberation would be worth buying even if you have most of these songs already. The project was overseen by Fat Wreck Chords head and NOFX frontman Fat Mike, and of course his band puts in an appearance. Label mates Good Riddance, Frenzal Rhomb, Anti-Flag, and Propagandhi are all represented, but it's not merely a Fat party, there are plenty of other participants as well. There are also offerings from Goldfinger, Hot Water Music, the Eyeliners, the Used, Good Charlotte, and more. Virtually all of the songs are easily found on the band's albums; however, Story of the Year offers up a taster from their forthcoming album, while the Used and Charlotte both deliver up harder-to-find numbers. Those latter two tracks are more than worth the price of admission alone. Only a few of the bands actually provide songs remotely connected with the cause -- NOFX's "Clams Have Feelings Too" obviously fits the bill, as does Goldfinger's "F**k Ted Nugent" and Propagandhi's harrowing "Purina Hall of Fame."
As for the rest, never mind, just enjoy the music...and all the extras it comes with. This includes an interview with the Used, live footage of Good Charlotte, PETA ads that were turned down by the networks, and if you can stomach it, footage shot inside a slaughterhouse. ...
