| | Al Mckenzie Reason To Be CD Al Mckenzie Discography of CDs
Al McKenzie’s musical endeavors are as diverse as his musical interest, from conducting the Buffalo Symphony, to serving on the Entertainment task force for the City of Detroit, to playing for the children’s choir at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in his hometown of Detroit Michigan. Al has always been unafraid to meet the challenges of his demanding music menu. His tools come honestly with teachers such as: Charles Coleman, Arthur Labrew, Earl Van Dyke, Ernie Rodgers and the great Teddy Harris Jr. After winning several awards in high school it was a natural progression for Al to attend Interlochen School of music. By the time Al was 20 years old, he played or recorded with an array of world-renowned artist such as Martha Reeves, O.C.Smith, Esther Phillips and Marlena Shaw to name a few. Al's career continued to blossom as the world opened up for him. He first toured with Martha Reeves as her Music Director at age 18, subsequent to which Al’s credits/endeavors read like the who’s who of music: The Spinners, The 4 Tops, Mary Wilson, Penny Wells, The Supremes, The Contours, Etta James, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Holiday, Kim Weston, Anita Baker just to name a few. His quest for new opportunities awarded him the opportunity to become the Music Director for Motown Record’s crown jewel The Temptations. Four albums, two gold records, one platinum album and a Grammy later, Al found his calling in starting AMAC Records and leading his own band. Since the release of his first full length CD “Is it love”, Al has signed wonderful talent from all over the world: Penny Wells (U.S.), Joan Crawford (U.S.), Charmaine Elliot (London), Larry Crockett (Paris) are all meeting their fans with critical acclaim. Currently Al is promoting his newest full length CD, “A Reason To Be”, which is filled with his smooth mature sound that his listeners have come to love. “A Reason To Be” includes a variety of selections where Al’s piano screams with passion on original compositions such as Sparkle, Angel as well as a Latin flavored rendition of Grover Washington’s Mister Magic. To know Al is to love him. To see him perform is to witness true passion and abandon. Join in the journey, the voyage, the experience of Al McKenzie. $13.59 This double-CD set is not only the best of Bill Chase's output but -- comprising all three of their albums -- virtually their complete finished studio work, before the plane crash that killed Chase and much of the group. The mastering on this Wounded Bird reissue is excellent, with a full solid bass sound topped by soaring highs on the brass and no compression to speak of. It's not as though this catalog has been overused, ...

| | Jim Pepper Pepper's Pow Wow CD (1971)
Reason To Be music CDs
$9.69 The late saxophonist Jim Pepper remains an enigma for some, a profoundly original player for others, and criminally unknown by most, even those in the jazz listening community. Pepper, who passed away in 1992, was of Native American descent -- Kaw and Creek Indian. He and Larry Coryell were in a band together in 1968, the Free Spirits, who were fooling with jazz and rock before Miles Davis was; indeed, before Tony Williams Lifetime were. Pepper had been using Native American indigenous folk music in his own jazz compositions from the middle of the '60s when he was encouraged to do so by Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry. As of 2007, he has no recordings in print in the United States save for this reissue by Wounded Bird of his debut album as a leader. Signed to Atlantic by Herbie Mann, who is listed as executive producer of Pepper's Pow Wow, Pepper set about recording his best known composition, "Witchi-Tai-To," which has been recorded by Ralph Towner and Oregon, Jan Garbarek, Julian Priester, and many others. Assisting Pepper in the studio were, in addition to producer Daniel Weiss, Coryell, alternating bassists Chuck Rainey and Jerry Jemmott, pianist Tom Grant, Spider Rice or Billy Cobham on "drums," and flutist and then wife Ravie Pepper. Because of its clean, immediate production provided by Weiss, Pepper's Pow Wow is as timeless in the 21st century as it was in 1971. The first recording of "Witchi-Tai-To" is here, in its initial rendering as a chant by a religious peyote tribe giving way to a transcendent folk melody that is carried on piano, electric wah wah guitar, shakers, Cobham's tom tom heavy drum kit, and Pepper's vocal before he ever blows a note. Over seven minutes in length, it's moving, beautiful, sweet and very powerful. Pepper understood something of soul music ...

Reason To Be album
$25.35 "Made in Zanzibar"Zanzibar is a beautiful island off the coast of East Africa. Sweet songs of love waft through the sultry air, eminating from the carved wooden doorwarys of ancient stone houses. This music, called Taarab, was strongly influenced by Egypt when it was under Ottoman rule. The Sultans began sending musicians there to study in the 1870's. Most of the instruments played today were brought from Egypt long ago. Over time, Zanzibari musicians have created their own tropical, East African flavor."Made in Zanzibar" is an experimental project, a bridge between East and West. Inspired by her early days of show business when she would dance to both classical and Arabic music, Tamalyn Dallal gave a cd containing several of her favorite songs to Matona, and asked him to use them as inspiration for music that she could dance to. He included three songs from Zanzibar's golden age, added an ancient Arabic song from pre-inquisition Spain, and vituoso Arabic style instrumental solos and "Made in Zanzibar" was born. Mohammed (Matona) IssaSon of the late Issa Matona, and second generation member of Ikhwani Safaa, Matona is on the board of directors and head music teacher at the prestigious "Dhow Countries Music Academy" in Zanzibar. (www.zanzibarmusic.org) He has been sent to Cairo, Egypt repeatedly to study music with the master, Alfred Jamil. He is part of the UMOJA East African Cultural Flying Carpet, where he goes to other African countries to share Zanzibari Taarab and learn their musical traditions. As a multi-instrumentalist, composer and songwriter Matona performs frequently both at home and in Europe. Ikhwani Safaa Musical ClubThe oldest musical ...
