$16.45 With the supply of new sax players never seeming to ebb, the up and comers on small indie labels may figure their best bet is to win some sort of soundalike competition, get their names out there, and then break through with something original to blow. If Paul Howards was the first saxman you ever heard in this genre, his silk meets funk fire would indeed be worth getting excited about. He knows how to write an easy to digest radio classic and throws off sparks on both alto and tenor that few could argue with. He and keyboardist Michael Crain are also adept at creating perfectly smooth sonic atmospheres. He's no doubt studied his craft and market thoroughly. Unfortunately, there are simply too many Sanborn (on alto) and Richard Elliot (on tenor) clones out there already for Howards to really make much of an impact as an original on either horn. Then again, you could say that about any number of today's young, more established players and argue that they've found their niches. So it's a toss up, great to listen to even if we've heard it done better before. Highlights among the typical pop-funk are the "Europa"-esque ballad "'Til the End of Time" and the tune destined to receive the most airplay, "Eola Nights," with the distinctive touch of co-composer Brian Culbertson. Like Andy Snitzer and Nelson Rangell, who once also did the Sanborn thing a little too closely, Howards seems likely to break out and someday find a sound of his own. ~ Jonathan Widran
Paul Howards' style has been described as heartfelt, melodic, and seductive. Each of these elements is something on their own; together they're something else!!! And the classy, sincere delivery makes it just a little more; it makes it both very cool ... and very hot! In a genre where predictability too often takes precedence over innovation, Paul stands apart as a performer whose music makes a difference.Although you may not be aware of it, millions have heard the music of Paul Howards. The Saxophonist/composer/producer ...

Illuminations music CDs
$16.39 With this followup to the highly acclaimed debut "Hwy 90", Shane Theriot has raised the bar of modern funk/rock guitar. Packed with melodic but ripping solos and simply killer guitar tones, Theriot goes right for the throat on this one, hitting heavier than on Hwy 90, but with one foot still planted in his native Louisiana soil. Compositionally there is much here to latch on to and the tunes are driven home by an all-star cast. The aptly named disc features on drums Jeff Sipe (Apt254Q), Jazz is Dead, Aquarium Rescue Unit), John Vidavocich(John Scofield, Astral Project), Russell Batiste (The Meters), David Northrup and Doug Belote. Bass- Adam Nitti (Dave Weckl), Victor Wooten, Tony Hall (Jewel, Emmylou Harris) and David Johnson. On keys Johnny Neel(Gov't Mule, Allman Bros.). On tuba, the amazing Kirk Joseph (Dirty Dozen Brass Band), trombone Mark Mullins, sax Jeff Coffin (Bela Fleck), percussion Jim Roberts. Japanese vocalist Kiyoshi Tamai makes a guest appearance on one tune, rounding out an amazingly enjoyable listening experience. Find out why people are saying that "Shane Theriot is an emerging talent with style and character by the bushel..."Guitarist Shane Theriot, was born in La. in 1970. Originally from the New Orleans area, he now resides in both La. and Nashville where, in addition to his work with the world renowned Neville Brothers, he's busy in the recording scenes of both Nashville and New Orleans. Beginning guitar at age 9, Shane was exposed to many kinds of music in the area, from Cajun/Zydeco to Rock and Jazz. He performed his first "professional ...

$12.65 "Hey, Daddy!" has been #1 on indiecharts since 10/15/2007! Still holding strong as of 1/4/2008!!!!Indie-Music has chosen "Hey Daddy!" as one of the Top 25 Indie Releases of 2007. Here's a link to the article: http:// indie-music /modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=6818 Cd Review: Julie Anne CHUCK GRAHAM Published: 09. 13. 2007"Hey, Daddy!" (Julie Anne's Jazz, LLC) One of the Baked Apple's newest songbirds releases her own self-produced first album, made with some of Tucson's finest musicians led by musical director, conductor and pianist Jeff Haskell. In the band are Ed Delucia, guitar; Scott Black, bass; Fred Hayes, drums; and a horn section of Greg Armstrong, reeds; Martin Patfield, trumpet/flugelhorn; and Rob Boone, trombone. There is a 13-piece string section, as well. The song list is just as classy, including the titles "Bewitched," "Cry Me A River," "Gee, Baby, Ain't I Good To You" and my favorite blues tune for gated communities, "Guess Who I Saw Today." Julie Anne sings with an uncanny sense of that old school cool which made jazz the ultimate hipster language of Cold War survivors, back when both sides kept their nuclear weapons of mass destruction at the ready. These days, when the government thinks suspected terrorists are lurking around every airport security checkpoint, it's good to know singers like Julie Anne are ready to serve in the pop culture service of helping keep us alert under fire. Her phrasing and intonation are the equal of any martini. Open to a new page of your bartender's guide and slip this CD into the mix. In no time at all, you'll be ready for anything. style: CLASSIC JAZZ grade: AReview by Indie-Music Julie Anne ~ Hey Daddy!Date: Saturday, November 03, 2007 @ 14:45:21 EDTTopic: ReviewsArtist: Julie AnneCD: Hey Daddy!Home: Tucson, ArizonaStyle: JazzQuote: "As a fan of classic big band jazz greats, such as Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington, I honestly must say that I don't expect a lot from current artists who attempt to perform the classics.
