Reggae Greats
$8.39 The De'villes spawn from selden, a small town in the middle of long island New York. Jarett (j.j. bones) Slionski grew up there, playing in bands since 96. Jarett was and still is an active member of the N.Y. punk rock comunity. After many years, a couple diferent bands, moving to las vegas and back, settling down with a wife and son, he is back to make your ears bleed once again. The De'villes sort of started out of boredom. Jarett just felt like it was time to do something again. Its like getting a tattoo or something, you do it once you have to keep doing it. If its in your blood you have to cut that vein open and let it bleed, and thats what the De'villes are trying to do, let it pour out.The De'villes are jarett (j.j. bones) slionski on lead vocals and guitar, eric skum on guitar and vocals, andrew bollerman on drums and the steve morton on bass and vocals. They play rock n' roll with a little of everything thrown in from punk rock to blues to rockabilly. Most of all they have fun and love what they do.Some reviews (updated 3/10/2008):Here is a great review from punkrockreview.org:The DeVilles – “Switchblades & Heartaches” – Can I just tell you that this is probably one of the best hip shaking, baby making, rock-n-roll bands I’ve ever heard. Until recently I haven’t been able to get into this rockabilly-ish, barroom rock-n-roll kind of music, because the bands are usually so over the top and theatrical, but holy shit this is a great record. The Devilles are a rock rooted, punk influences band that splits the difference between a rockabilly and Ramones-style punk, not unlike Social Distortion did back in 1990. With songs like (Johnny Sings The Blues) & (Between These Streets) The De’Villes write songs with a lot more personal feeling and deep felt emotion, better than most bands with similarly styled bands. The guitar parts sound lean, sharp and powerful, while the vocals are deep & powerful in their own rite, with a touch of grit for prosperity. The drumming has a tight snap that suits both the thrashier songs as well as some of the slower, blues-ier tunes. “Switchblades & Heartaches” isn’t a good album it is a masterpiece of deep rooted Punk-n-Roll, with very few that match in comparison. From rudereviews. org The De'Villes "Switchblades& Heartaches" This type of music has been cheated in the not so far away past by it's fans and more importantly by it's musicians. I'm speaking of Rock & Roll inspired punk music. Some call it Rockabilly but I don't think that's apprioate. To me, Rockabilly is much more of a disciplined art form where your are constantly trying to pay homage to a beautiful musical past. The music the De'Villes play is no doubt inspired by the existence of places like Sun Records in the fiftes and sixties. The very fabric the AMERICAN DREAM OF ROCK N ROLL was stitched on. But the band will inevitably fall into a category whether it be "Rockabilly", "Alt Country" or whatever other psuedo-moinkers the cretins at Maximum Rock N Roll are coming up with these days. Again, this is where I feel this music has been cheated. People don't want to hear original takes on original Rock & Roll anymore. They want there Rock spoon fed and dressed up in a fantastic costume. The soul of the De'Villes music is from dirty bars that are haunted by long dead blues musicians. As real and honest as they can be they weave lonely songs ...
