The sign on the club door says 'rock'n'roll tonight' and if you don't like it, come back tomorrow for country night, right? Wrong. Who says a modern day rock'n'roll band can't sound like tomorrow's country music or that an indie pop band can't swing? Who says a trio from Germany can't play Americana? The TriSonics actually thrive on crossing genre borders. Listen to their second album 'Welcome to the Club' and you'll find Rockabilly ('These Walls'), Country (the title track), Swing ('Should've Known Better'), and even a homage to Britpop ('Lyla') as well as a cover of a Blondie hit ('Call Me') from 1980. You can also hear a real smoocher ('I Believe in Love'), a bombastic bit of jungle music ('Ooh I Like That Voodoo'), a track that opens with the sound of a shovel hitting dirt ('Digging a Hole'), a ballad ('In My Arms') as well as a song with a grand gypsy finale. And the final track manages to pull all these elements into one song. The TriSonics teamed up with producer Michael Heilrath (Couch) and some of the best musicians in Munich to put a record together that's as multi-flavored as the show schedule at your favourite local live dive and still keeps it all together. When prominent members of successful bands make solo albums, they tend to take one of two approaches: either they try to avoid sounding like the parent groups, or they don't. Robert Lamm, keyboardist and singer with Chicago, for the most part went the former route with his first three solo albums, and there was much validity to that, if only because the band's most identifiable style -- its horn sound -- was played by others. Lamm did bring his familiar strengths to his solo albums, particularly his direct, personal way with lyrics and his eclectic musical taste. But usually you wouldn't mistake a track from one of those albums for a Chicago recording. His fourth album, Subtlety & Passion, is a different story. Some very peculiar rock music hybrids emerged in the 1970s, but none was any more peculiar than Univers Zero, a classically influenced group of primarily Belgian musicians. Sometimes compared to the slightly earlier and enormously influential King Crimson, Univers Zero was actually much more extreme. While Crimson used Robert Fripp's lead guitar and Ian McDonald's Mellotron to approximate a symphonic rock sound rooted in the 19th century romantic tradition of Richard Strauss, Mahler and Wagner, the earliest versions of Univers Zero were not only more purely classical in their instrumentation (bassoon, violin, viola, cello, harmonium, spinet piano), but much more contemporary in their musical appropriation of the dissonant, jagged 20th century classical styles of Stravinsky, Bartók, Ligeti, and Penderecki, among others.
