Susan Anthony -Tolbert Susan Anthony-Tolbert is a retired Professor of Psychology. Currently, she spends her time “harping” at various events and celebrations in the Maryland and Virginia area. She and her husband share the tranquility of farm life with their much beloved horses, mule, Bassett hound and several cats. Susan began her musical training at the age of three and has studied piano, marimba and guitar as well as both lever and pedal harps with master musicians from Julliard and Curtis. Initially, she was trained in composition and counterpoint by her father. In college, she completed courses and seminars in music theory, composition, and orchestration. Recently, she has competed in a number of music competitions both for performance and Composition (even won a few). Her other harp CDs which also celebrate the land and waters of the Chesapeake Bay area of Maryland and Virginia are available on cdbaby.com and amazon.com. They continue to sell well both nationally and locally. This CD includes some of my favorite songs written for or by children. I have arranged this music, including the famous nursery songs, with the intention of soothing and relaxing the listener, regardless of age. Many of the nursery songs, written hundreds of years ago, are believed to reflect historical events. Because expressed discontent with the government in the Middles Ages, could have resulted in death, nursery songs and rhymes were a popular method of disguising criticism. Many of these nursery songs were printed in England as early as 1570 in little pamphlets called “CHAPBOOKS”. These chapbooks were inexpensive, small( usualy less that 24 pages), soft covered books. In addition to nursery rhymes, they contained stories, ballads and religious information. There were a great many pictures. There are a LOT of adults walking around Houston Texas who will tell you their introduction to music , the one that started their lifelong love of music, began when they were five years old in the kindergarten classroom of songstress Glynace Eastham. Now known as simply "GLYNACE" to kids all over, Mrs. Eastham is a Pied Piper with a following that includes music lovers of all ages. Even if you don't think you like family/children's music, just spend a few minutes listening to her guitar-accompanied original sing-along songs. Grown men in Florida and Massachusetts (and perhaps elsewhere!) are WORKING OUT to the upbeat songs and “cooling down” to the lullabye at the end! We are told that you might not be able to fall asleep the first night you listen, because the incredibly catchy tunes will keep running through your head!! Glynace Easthamhas her roots in Louisiana, but considers herself to be a “dual citizen” now of both TEXAS AND Louisiana. She was a kindergarten and Pre-K teacher in both public and private schools for over 25 years prior to her early retirement in 2004. She had an early intro to music from her guitar/ harmonica/ piano-playing grand-mother, and she picked up a guitar herself at 12 and the music progressed!
