I am an experimental pianist/guitarist/composer who focuses on creating what I call "musical gates". To me, the symbol of the gate represents an entrance into an otherworldly realm of suspension where something mysterious, transcendent, or even terrifying is revealed. Therefore most of my compositions provide, at some point in the unfolding of a piece or in a piece as a whole, a strong sense of passing into a musical space where extraordinary conditions prevail. I embody this compositional vision in many diverse styles. My latest CD Ghost places these gates in the context of some east/west fusion experiments that integrate elements of western classical and popular music with ritualistic and shamanic traditions from the east. These experiments, inspired as they were by Japanese and Chinese ghost stories, have resulted in some highly cinematic music with a narrative quality. This is a good thing since it will challenge you to imagine what images, actions, or emotions correspond to the sounds. The titles I have chosen suggest correspondences. But I am sure you will forge your own unique ghost stories. Hopefully, these stories will enable you to encounter some of those forgotten, hidden, or secret things behind the gates. Few jazz pianists could ever hope to rival the technical mastery of Art Tatum. From the 1930s on through the `50s, Tatum's dazzling facility made it seem as if two pianists were playing at once. Though he often performed solo, his virtuosity allowed him to make the transition from swing to bebop effortlessly. Tatum's eclectic style also reflected influences from blues and classical music, and from early jazz and pop music of the time.
Long considered a classic album, PIANO STARTS HERE was assembled from studio and live sources from 1933 and 1949, respectively. Thanks to 21st-century technology however, PIANO has received a new lease on life, containing previously edited selections presented in their entirety, previously unissued tunes, and vastly improved sound quality. Music brings us together...During the year 1997 I improvised and saved these ideas into the sequencer. Later I arranged all parts and the result is here for You. This is an experiment in Light Classical Style and I hope You enjoy it.
