These Streets album
$19.98 It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Like its closest cousin, Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-1985, Live Anthology almost overcompensates for the long wait by offering almost too much music, cherrypicking highlights from 1978 to 2007. In its simplest incarnation, Live Anthology is a super-affordable, four-disc box set running 48 tracks, which is eight cuts longer than Springsteen's box, plenty long enough for most fans, but in its deluxe version, available only through Best Buy, there's an additional CD, plus two previously unreleased DVDs -- a 1978 New Years Eve concert from Santa ...
| | John Mayer Battle Studies CD (2009)
These Streets CD music
$11.17 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's as much about texture as it is about song.something perfectly appropriate for a make-out album like this. Sometimes, Mayer dips too heavily toward the texture, but he can't resist a good, tight melody and builds the bulk of Battle Studies upon them: the elegant "Half of My Heart," the softly soulful "Perfectly Lonely." Here, Mayer is effortlessly seductive and somewhat irresistible, ...

| | Beyonce I Am...Sasha Fierce CD (2008) Bonus Track; Deluxe Edition
These Streets CD music
$9.99 I AM. SASHA FIERCE represents another change of pace for Beyoncé. Unlike the relatively streamlined, retro-soul inflected B'DAY, I AM... is a sprawling two-disc set designed to reflect two conflicting sides of Beyoncé's musical personality. The first disc sports reflective, sometimes moody ballads, while the second, attributed to Beyoncé's brash alter ego, Sasha Fierce, is loaded with propulsive dance-floor fillers. Except for this stylistic divide, I AM. pays only nominal attention to its supposed concept, focusing instead on a set of excellent, radio-ready songs--neatly avoiding the possibility of I AM. becoming some sort of Chris Gaines-style ...
| | Lone Justice Shelter CD (1986)
These Streets music CDs
$9.79 Shelter finds Lone Justice abandoning the cowpunk image of their debut in favor of a more polished '80s sound. What they came up with is rather a mishmash of material that only points the way for Maria McKee to don a solo outfit and carry on alone. Shelter falls into the trap of a record company dictating how a disc should sound no matter what might happen to the group producing it. There are strong cuts here -- most notably, "I Found Love" (a real '80s-sounding product), "Wheels," ...

| | Scoldees My Pathetic Life CD (1999)
These Streets album
$6.19 Those who are into irony should get a kick out of knowing what type of artists have influenced Scoldees vocalist Nancy Sirianni and who she is married to. Sirianni, one of the Long Island, NY band's two lead singers, is an introspective artist who brings to mind such storytellers as Shawn Colvin and Suzanne Vega. In other words, she would fit in perfectly on a Lillith Fair stage. Here's the ironic part: She's married to Jackie Martling, aka Jackie the Jokeman, a key figure on The Howard Stern Show. While it's fun to note that an artist worthy of The Lillith Fair is married to one of Stern's associates -- Stern isn't exactly a poster child for political correctness, and his raunchy brand of entertainment wouldn't go over terribly well at Lillith Fair -- that bit of information isn't as important as the fact that the Scoldees show a fair amount of promise on this appealing, if a bit uneven release. Blending folk, rock, and pop, the Scoldees bring a healthy balance of humor and sensitivity to this debut album. Neither Sirianni nor Jack Hoffman, the band's other lead vocalist, have a problem being sensitive. Nonetheless, their songs have an edge and some grit, and the humorous element that asserts itself at times (especially on "All I Want," "Cellophane Man," and the title song) is a definite asset. You can tell that Sirianni appreciates the delicacy of Colvin and Vega, but she's also capable of incorporating the grit of Sheryl Crow or Alanis Morissette. Hoffman, meanwhile, sounds like he's learned a thing or two from Mick Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham. Not perfect but often engaging, My Pathetic Life lets us know that the Scoldees are a band to keep an eye on. ~ Alex Henderson
"Take four best friends, give them voices capable of bloodline-like four-part harmonies, the talent to write catchy hooks and melodies, and the will to take their music to the public on their own terms (adding a rather bent view of life and a propensity to laughter), and the result will be a band like the scoldees." -ENTERTAINMENT TODAY, LADefinition:scold ~ ee -noun- One who is scolded, generally for having a bit too much fun. What’s with the dog, you might ask? Does a member of the band belong to him? What’s his name? Does he need the glasses, or is he just trying to look cool? Here’s the scoop…We were working on our debut record during the summer of 1999. Also that summer, we were honored and slap-happy to be invited to play at the 30-Year Reunion Concert at Yasgur’s Farm. Not at the actual site of the 1969 Woodstock Concert, that parcel of land was down the road a spell. A couple named Roy Howard and Jeryl Abramson had bought the farm years before from Max and Miriam Yasgur, and had been welcoming musicians and campers for years, especially on the middle weekend each August. But 1999 was a big ...
