| | Sally Oldfield Water Bearer CD Sally Oldfield Discography of CDs
The sister of the TUBULAR BELLS composer Mike Oldfield, Sally Oldfield had contributed to many of her brother's recordings before releasing this solo debut in 1978. With her mellifluous vocals and a similar multi-instrumental ability to her brother, Oldfield spins a series of Tolkien-esque tales that set her firmly in the vanguard of 1970s prog rock.

Purchase Water Bearer CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
Water Bearer album
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement of her father's passions, only now, they've become his daughter's treasures, as well. ...
| | Them Crooked Vultures CD (2009)
Water Bearer CD music
$11.17 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. as easily as he did with avant-queen Diamanda Galas and nu-folkster Sara Watkins; Dave Grohl, who hopped into an empty drummer's chair whenever the opportunity presented itself; and Josh Homme, who set up a mini-empire based entirely on jam sessions. If Them Crooked Vultures brings to mind Homme's projects more than Grohl's ...
| | Avett Brothers I And Love And You CD (2009)
Water Bearer music CDs
$11.25 North Carolina sibling duo the Avett Brothers return in 2009, fresh off a few years of building a cult following for its melodic and rootsy alt-bluegrass sound, with the subdued I AND LOVE AND YOU. The opening single and title track basks in piano-pop splendor in an odd mix of Beach Boys, Byrds, and the Band.
The Avett Brothers continue charting the same musical course as EMOTIONALISM and MIGNONETTE on major-label debut I AND LOVE AND YOU, despite the presence of hands-on producer Rick Ruben. The country-folk duo continue to add elements of pop and hillbilly rock to a country/bluegrass foundation on the 2009 LP, a record with a newfound emphasis on piano and nuanced arrangements. Working with a larger budget allows the group to add small flourishes -- a cello line here, a keyboard crescendo there -- but ...

| | Dave Alvin King Of California CD (1994)
Water Bearer music CDs
$11.99 For his fourth album, 1994's KING OF CALIFORNIA, Dave Alvin mixed new songs with selections revisited from his back catalog, as well as numbers first recorded with his previous band, The Blasters. The setting is a pared-down acoustic ensemble perfectly suited to his songs of the downtrodden, the lovelorn and the lost--all tempered with a sense of hope. The title track is a perfect example of Alvin's finely crafted tales of the working class dreaming of sunnier climes. Bobby Lloyd Hick's brushed snare beautifully echoes the literature of the lyrics.
Throughout, the album's spare accompaniment is rich with warm interplay, creating a sense of community that further bolsters this music's personal nature. Singer Rosie Flores duets with Alvin on one song, and Syd Straw lends her voice to another. "Border Radio" brings things to a close, with a gorgeously quiet rendition that celebrates the heart that was always ...

| | Gates Of Slumber Hymns Of Blood & Thunder CD (2009)
Water Bearer album
$11.39 Indiana's the Gates of Slumber is the greatest American biker doom band not fronted by Scott "Wino" Weinrich. Guitarist/vocalist Karl Simon is very much in the Wino neighborhood, vocally, offering a hoarse shout with a surprising upper range, but as a guitarist he's much more obviously descended from Tony Iommi; a lot of the riffs on this (and every Gates album) could have come off Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and/or Sabotage. That's not a bad thing, of course; classicism and craft have long been prized in metal. Besides, the band sounds astonishing on this release. Producer Sanford Parker has given them a full, analog sound that pours from the speakers and fills the room with warm waves of distorted guitar, thundering drums that sound like tympani, and ...
