Exploder album
$15.65 The release of 2009's ENDGAME brings with it a startling realization: if first-generation thrash metal fans had been polled about which of the genre's "Big Four" -- Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth -- would prove to be the most resilient and consistently prolific over the next quarter century, the only sure-fire consensus would probably have been "well, anyone but Megadeth!" And yet, 12 studio albums and 150-plus songs later -- more than any of the other three have managed -- that's exactly what's come to pass. The group's second release for Roadrunner, whose title apparently refers to "coming full circle" rather than any sort of goodbye, finds the latest iteration of Megadeth-- debuting new guitarist Chris Broderick(ex-Nevermore, Jag Panzer)--working primarily within their technical thrash comfort zone (think PEACE SELLS through RUST IN PEACE), with only a few latter-day elements and rare experimental diversions. As such, deceptively simple guitar-shredding master classes like "This Day We Fight!," "1,320" (surprisingly, written about "funny car" racing), and first single "Headcrusher" are cut from the same bloody ...
| | Bon Jovi Cross Road: 14 Classic Grooves CD (1994)
Exploder CD music
$10.45 Bon Jovi finally offers CROSS ROAD, a collection of their best songs plus two recent compositions and a new version of a classic. Fans and first-timers alike will delight in and sing along with this choice blend of hard pop and edgy anthems.
"Someday I'll Be Saturday Night" and "Always" continue the Bon Jovi tradition of gritty love songs and rock poetry. Jon Bon Jovi's coarse yet smoothe vocals reach out and paint images of characters caught in an American scenic painting, "gotta live my life like I ain't got nothin' but this roll of the dice" Jon Bon Jovi claims in one song. With "Prayer '94" the band offers a toned-down version of "Livin' On A Prayer" which through its subdued, semi-acoustic demeanor achieves an intensity not found in the original.

| | Alice In Chains Dirt CD (1992)
Exploder music CDs
$6.25 Brutal and hard but exciting and surprisingly melodic, DIRT made Alice In Chains national stars in 1992 after being around the Seattle alternative rock scene for many years. They produce a blindingly together sound, with the bass of Mike Starr able to switch between following the bass drum beat and cloning Jerry Cantrell's guitar note for note, albeit a few octaves lower. They have such polish that they are often reminiscent of the heyday of Led Zeppelin. Lyrically they plow the familiar angst furrow with tracks such as 'Junkhead', ...
| | Scorpions Lovedrive CD (1979)
Exploder songs
$6.49 Prior to Lovedrive's recording, the Scorpions' lineup had a major change when their lead guitarist, Uli Jon Roth, quit the group (not to mention, the rock genre was rapidly changing). With this in mind, the band not only highlighted the album with the licks and riffs of three guitarists (Rudolf Schenker, Michael Schenker, Matthias Jabs), but they also dramatically changed their style to sound more like that of Van Halen. This change is quite welcome; not only are the performances more unpredictable, but the lyrics and melodies are better written. In fact, some of the Scorpions' most classic songs, such ...
| | Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow CD (1975) Remastered
Exploder album
$6.49 After British maestro guitarist Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple in 1974, he recruited Purple Records signees Elf as his backing band. And although Rainbow's 1975 debut was only a hint of future greatness, the album more than holds its own.
Elf was led by dramatic metal vocalist Ronnie James Dio, who seemed to connect with Blackmore in quite a chemical fashion. "Man on the Silver Mountain" is prime material, as is the six-minute blues-metal classic "Catch the Rainbow." Dio's shining vocals, shown to great effect here, have been emulated by hard rock vocalists throughout the years. "The Temple of the King" is another highlight, showcasing Blackmore's emotional guitar licks. "Sixteenth Century Greensleeves" is the group's ode to medieval times. "Still I'm Sad" is an instrumental jam that closes the album. Blackmore's fretwork, while speedy, comes from the heart. Although Rainbow's incarnations would change through the years, the drive and energy of the original lineup holds a special place in hard rock history. ...
| | Tesla Mechanical Resonance CD (1986)
Exploder CD music
$7.65 Tesla was a bit of an anomaly on the '80s scene. While making concessions to the Sunset Strip mentality of the era (song titles littered with slang, tracks laced with thinly veiled euphemisms), the music itself holds a great deal more in common with rough-and-tumble hard rock than with watered-down glam. The record's greatest assets are vocalist Jeff Keith, who combines an authentic blues delivery with competent melodic range, and guitarist Keith Hannon, who supplies ample electricity amid the four-measure riffing without devolving into showy, soulless solos. There are a handful of slowed-down offerings on RESONANCE, although, unlike pandering power ballads of the era, songs like "Changes" display a knack for tasteful instrumentation and clever arrangements. Listening to RESONANCE, it's not difficult to see how Tesla later came up with their classic stripped-down 1990 cover of Five Man Electrical Band's "Signs."

| | Ruts Crack/Grin & Bear It CD (2003) (Import) United Kingdom
Exploder songs
$9.09 The import-only EMI release The Crack/Grin and Bear It includes the Ruts' resonant 1979 album The Crack in its entirety as well as Grin and Bear It, which Virgin released at the time as an odds 'n' sods affair. The latter album includes the band's last single with vocalist Malcolm Owen, "West One (Shine on Me)," and six additional studio tracks as well as live versions of "S.U.S.," "Babylon's Burning," and "Society." The Ruts are often overshadowed by their peers in the Clash and the Sex Pistols. This is due in part to their dissolution in the wake of Owen's untimely death from heroin abuse. But like Gang of Four -- another group that has lived on as a considerable influence despite limited output/life -- the Ruts' visceral patchwork of punk fury, reggae, and dub rhythms and Owen's own distinctive vocal style would influence a host of later groups, from Fugazi to the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and mark the group as one of the most important forces to rise out of British punk's second wave. Anthems like "In a Rut," "Something That I Said," and "H-Eyes" still kick with electricity 20-plus years on, while earthy reggae workouts like "Love in Vain" and the incredible "Jah ...
