Sound Of Silver
$12.59 When Layne Staley died from a drug overdose in 2002, it had already been several years since most Alice in Chains fans stopped hoping for a new album. The singer had become a recluse since the late-`90s, and there was little indication that AIC would ever again produce much in the way of new music. ...
| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
Sound Of Silver
$11.99 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement of her father's passions, only now, they've become his daughter's treasures, as well. It's an affirming story, but that's all it would be if Cash didn't sing her heart out here. The opener, a version of Jimmie Rodgers' "Miss the Mississippi and You," is full of comfortable grace and sentiment, ...

| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Sound Of Silver
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.
Those familiar with the ...
| | Ray LaMontagne Trouble CD (2004)
Sound Of Silver
$9.69 Every once in a while a singer/songwriter comes down the pike in the grand emotive tradition of Neil Young and Van Morrison. In the early 2000s, the quietly intense folk of Iron & Wine and the rootsy-experimental stylings of Sufjan Stevens continued that lineage. Ray LaMontagne, whose impressive 2004 debut, TROUBLE, draws on alt-country, roots rock, and progressive folk in a unique, strikingly sincere way, seems a likely candidate for ...
| | The Ultimate Bee Gees CDs (2009)
Sound Of Silver
$18.94 Functioning as something of a replacement for the 2001 collection Their Greatest Hits: The Record, The Ultimate Bee Gees covers much of the same ground as that double-disc set, albeit in not quite so linear a fashion. The Record marched through its 40 tracks chronologically, opening with the stately ...
| | Tom Cochrane Mad Mad World CD (1992)
Sound Of Silver
$8.49 In the U.S.,Red Rider never matched the level of success they had achieved in their native Canada. They had several AOR hits, including the brooding, now-staple "Lunatic Fringe," but mainstream attention eluded them. Lead singer Tom Cochrane broke through in a major way with "Life Is a Highway" from his solo debut, Mad Mad World. The song was a driving rocker with an insistent hook. Dominating the airwaves, the song reached the Top Five on the pop charts (Red Rider had never managed to even break into the Top 50). There seems to be a little more fire in Cochrane's belly than on the final Red Rider record. Mad Mad World is some of his strongest work. Literate lyrics and infectious melodies abound on songs like the Don Henley-like title track, the resiliently rousing "No Regrets," the chugging love song "Sinking Like a Sunset," and the chiming, big-beat ballad "Friendly Advice." There's a bit of filler near the end (save for the elegant closer "All The King's Men"), but it's a small complaint. Members of Red Rider play on most of the tracks and Mad Mad World should be met with delight from longtime fans. ...

| | Tarriers Tell The World About This CD (2004)
Sound Of Silver
$10.69 The Tarriers haven't gone down in folk music history like the Kingston Trio or the Brothers Four, probably because they were never as popular. Perhaps the group's lineup never remained stable long enough, or perhaps the trio's racial mix was too radical for the times. Whatever the reason, it in no way diminishes the Tarriers' musical accomplishments. The style and substance of Tell the World About This (1959), the group's second album, is similar to the above-mentioned groups, but is in no way derivative. The original Tarriers, in fact, formed and released their first album in 1957, making the group's sound one of the prototypes for popular revival trios and quartets. And while the Tarriers relied on the same group of folk songs and simple accompaniment as their fellow groups, they also dug a little deeper into the fabric of the material than the typical pop-folk purveyors of the time. There are nice versions of "Bald Headed Woman" and "Take This Hammer," and the trio turns the country-flavored ...
