With Angels, the Helsinki vampires known as the 69 Eyes offer a flip-side sequel to their 2005 effort, Devils. "The slutty rocker to the seductive sister" is the way the goth-metal band perfectly puts it, and if Devils earned the band a loyal following among the black-nail-polish underground, Angels is designed to blow the 69 Eyes up to Type O Negative status (none of this applies to their native Finland, where they are already absolutely huge). Deep-voiced and dead as far as you can tell, Jyrki 69's lead vocals still bear a strong resemblance to Peter Steele -- or shamelessly rip him off if you believe the detractors -- but there's a new, strikingly loose way he uses his pipes that brings to mind Suicide's Alan Vega at his most Elvis. The Jim Steinman jones the band had on Devils is blown up to even bigger proportions with layered productions from the returning team of Hiili Hiilesmaa and Johnny Lee Michaels, along with lyrics that are filled with epic rock fantasies and bats out of hell. The single "Perfect Skin" juggles pop, lust, and dark humor with an unforgettable hook, and the title track is a behemoth on which both Sisters of Mercy and Nightwish fans can agree. "Frankenhooker" deserves special mention for the great couplet "Dirty ass Frankenhooker/Got no class graveyard strutter" and "Rocker" is so proudly dumb that it works its way around to smart, or at least sly. While there might be a handful of longtime fans who will balk at the album's ambition, Angels is the 69 Eyes at their sharpest, and it's arguably their best full-length to date. ~ David Jeffries

Angels Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Fan-flippin-tastic The 69 Eyes always switch it up. Angels is no exception. I think the lyrics are better then the past and Jyrki's voice is in tip top shape. I really feel the darkness of LA when I listen to this CD. The lyrics to Desolation Land have a quality that would make Jim Morrison proud. I certainly don't think Jyrki would mind that. Submitted by tinajean13 (Funkytown, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Nice Well, when I first picked up this album, I thought, "Eh, I haven't listened to The 69 Eyes alot lately." I was expecting it to be a nice listen, as all 69 Eyes CD's are. By the 4th song, Ghost (Which I absolutely love), I knew that this CD was easily their best. All the songs fit in really well with each other, and this album has pushed The 69 Eyes back up into my favorite bands list. The remake of "Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams" made me happy as well. It has always been one of my favorite 69 Eyes songs. My advice, by this album, listen through Devils, and then immediately switch over to Angels, because thats right where Devils left off! Two sides of evil....that's what you are. Welly, well. First Devils ,now Angels. Let me just say that if you dug Devils, you will love Angels. More of the same great goth metal from these finnish vampires. Before I go further- you must buy the cd with the bonus track. The bonus track is an updated version of "Wrap your troubles in dreams" with vocals sung by Jyrki. It is perfect.
Overall the album is solid- great combination of the goth, glam, elvis meets morrison, burning palm trees under a blood red sunset strip, Joey Ramone turned vampire vibe, these guys have perfected. Lots of great heavy rockers with blazing guitars and a few slower more mysterious, romantic epic type songs.
Classics are going to be "Never say Die","Perfect Skin","Wings & Hearts" and "Los Angeles". I really like the way "Star of Fate" starts, it's quite different. "Frankenhooker" is awesome and funny. Good to see these guys have a sense of humor. Girls -these guys aren't looking for some quick easy groupie hook up. Vampires need real love too.
My least favorite so far is "Rocker". Kind of more standard bluesy rock song about being a rocker. duh! Lyrics are not the cleverest, I could have done without this one.
A word about the production- same, if not better than Devils. Great touches of organ, effects and orchestration throughout. Nice female background vocals on some of the songs also.
Pick it up and enjoy, and stay out of the light...

Angels
$17.75 Brooklyn based Matty Charles and the Valentines are: Matty Charles on guitar and vocals, Josh Stark on upright bass and backing vocals, and D.J. Mendel on drums." Even in the oft quiet and cozy confines at Pete's, the audience has to lean closer to hear the delicate storytelling of Matty Charles' songs. Only occasionally does the band pick up the tempo or the volume, but Charles' slow ruminations, backed by upright bass and old-style country brushwork, reward the attention with warm, well-considered tones and poignant tales of love. The core of the music, however, is his voice, which has that rare blend of resignation and gritty hope one seldom finds this side of Guy Clark." - Village Voice (Dufresne)" Matty Charles and the Valentines play original music that reaches back to mine the riches of American roots music while gracefully avoiding the usual pitfalls of being eclectic or anachronistic. ...
